In this highly interactive class, we will address these topics: Session One: Students will take an in-class learning styles inventory and, with the guidance of the instructor, score their inventories to determine their learning style preferences. Session Two: The instructor will present more information about each learning style and discuss with students examples of when each style could be particularly effective to increase their understanding. Session Three: practice READING FOR MEANING...
Students will gain insight into different styles of learning and their own preferences for how they learn. Students will gain specific strategies that will nurture their learning strengths, as well as develop other learning styles, to become a more well-rounded learner. Students will learn to "read" clues about other people's learning styles (including their teachers') and use that information to improve their own performance.
I am trained in several learning style models, including Howard Gardnener's model of multiple intelligences (Harvard professor of developmental psychology) and The Thoughtful Classroom's learning style model which is partially based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. I will use the Thoughtful Classroom's learning styles inventory with students and then draw from both models to share effective strategies to improve learning. I am also a former classroom teacher, administrator, and science education professor and have taught high school and university students (future teachers) about learning styles.
