This highly interactive course will examine the fundamentals of weather theory, based on the Federal Aviation Administration's "Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge." We will explore the structure of the atmosphere, weather elements (temperature, pressure, wind, moisture, cloud types and formations, icing, air masses, turbulence, lightening, storms, etc.) and patterns, and how these impact aviation operations. We will practice decoding various aviation weather reporting products, and apply them to flight planning. Throughout the course, we will look at several weather-related aviation mishap video case studies as related to the course content. No prior experience or knowledge is required for this course. While it will focus on how weather impacts aviation, anyone interested in meteorology or weather principles will find this course interesting and beneficial. Week 1: The atmosphere and atmospheric pressure Week 2: Wind, wind shear, and wind and pressure charts Week 3: Moisture, dew point, and clouds Week 4: Air masses and fronts Week 5: Icing Week 6: Turbulence and lightening
