Do you love astronomy AND mythology? This class combines the best of both as we delve into the science and culture of our solar system. Each week, we'll tell a different story from Greek mythology that can be found in the sky, and discuss the real constellations that go with them. We will use the planetarium software Stellarium to locate each constellation, identify its stars, and discuss where it might be visible in the night sky. Students will explore the constellations in the context of Ancient Greek myths. Students will observe features of stars, including position in the sky, apparent brightness, size, and color.
I teach astronomy at the American Museum of Natural History and look forward to sharing my love of the solar system with you!
Supplies for the constellation project: -Week 1 - Blank star map printout - provided by instructor -Weeks 2-6: Provided printout for each constellation - distributed weekly by the instructor -Pencil and eraser -Preferred coloring supplies -Optional: Stickers, highlighters, or other art tools

Greek and Roman myths contain references to sexuality, violence, and mortality. These references will be addressed in passing in a developmentally appropriate and sensitive manner.
We will be drawing from sources such as Homer's Iliad, D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths, and the book Star Stories. All stories will be retold in the instructor's original words using public domain images. We will be utilizing the program Stellarium to visualize the night sky.
