*****************************PLEASE REACH OUT if another day/time can work better for your learner. ******************* You are welcome to sign up if you took ASL 1 elsewhere, or if you took it with me. Camera is to be on at all times. This is a very interactive class between teacher and all learners. It is also important that your face and upper body are visible, so the teacher and fellow learners can see everyone signing. You will be learning part 2 of American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary, including proper ASL. THIS CLASS will be 100% ASL, with some typing via chat. We will play games and do fun activities, while learning! Some pages will be screenshot to show materials connected to the lessons. Learners will learn where to find vocab to study online for homework. Each 55 minute class will involve vocabulary, and knowledge about ASL and the Deaf community, including Deaf history and about Deaf culture. There will be plenty of review each week. We will watch some short videos and discuss them in class, related to the information being taught. Learners will go into breakout rooms to practice their ASL vocabulary and sentences with one another, as the teacher pops into each "room" to assist, as needed, if there enough learners. ASL is a visual language! Full one year/semester of knowledge is required. Zoom chat will also be utilized for communication. Much of this class will be a real-life high school curriculum, approved by the University of California. APPROXIMATELY what we will do week by week....I will work at the speed of the learners, so it might fluctuate a bit: Week 1 Daily routines, time of day Week 2 More routines, spatial organization Week 3 More on alerts, hygiene, frequency Week 4 NAD, CC, more on video relay, activities, noun-verb Week 5 Movies, captions, 711, VRS, clothing, various types of signed languages-when to use and when not to use, etc. Week 6 More clothing, more classifiers, C.A.R.T, more on captioning Week 5 More on family Week 6 More classifiers, characteristics and personality traits, Week 7 More classifiers Week 8 The body Week 9 Ethnicities, Deaflympics, hairstyles, facial hair, disabilities, characteristics Week 10 Health, illnesses, injuries Week 11 The world around us, nature, CI's, hearing aids, ethic organizations Week 12 Hometowns, housing, around your home, more on spatial visualization Week 13 Around town/cities, floor plans Week 14 Commercials with ASL, Deaf West theater, other theaters, plays, movies, TV shows, Deaf actors/actresses, Week 15 CL: Claw 5, Collectivism vs. individualism, spatial visualization, TDI for access, money, dollars and cents Week 16 Getting around town, hearing world, more on money, purchasing items Week 17 Making plans Week 18 More on Agent Markers, occupations, work, study, To Be, food Week 19 Eating out, Deaf owned restaurants, and businesses Week 20 Animals, Service dogs for those with hearing loss Week 21 More on CLs, using a 2nd language in life Week 22 Countries, continents and travel Week 23 More on countries and travel, Deaf travel agents/agencies Week 24 Basic medical terms, STEM, Deaf in medical professions, careers, AMPHL, technology, free time, instruments, entertainment, Deaf clubs. Learners will learn 100s of more signs and will be able to sign sentences and communicate in ASL. Learners will have a rich understanding of the Deaf community, history, culture, well-known Deaf people, Deaf people who changed, or are changing the world, important events in history connected to the Deaf community and people with disabilities, and so much more.

I have been teaching the beautiful language of American Sign Language (ASL) for about 25 years at many venues. I have taught at a public high school and a private middle school and high school. I also have taught at a teen center, recreation and park classes-ages 6 months (baby and me)--to adults, afterschool/in school programs at public and private schools for ages preschool to 6th grade. I also have taught adults though an adult education program. I have taught MANY homeschoolers, as well, privately and in groups. I have taught using Zoom and I am very familiar with its functions.
I worked for GLAD (Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness) as a job placement counselor, advocate and ASL interpreter for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, helping my clients get great jobs!
I graduated with my BA from California State University, Northridge, which was a huge Deaf Studies and ASL program. I have 50 post graduate units in special education and world languages.
I started an ASL program at a private high school and created the entire curriculum from the ground up for ASL 1,2,3, getting all three approved by the University of California for curriculum guidelines, A-G California high school graduation requirements. (Language other than English/2nd language) ASL is not English, and I will teach your children the proper way to sign in ASL, as well as teach about the rich and amazing Deaf culture, Deaf community and Deaf history.
I will move at the pace of the students in my classes.
