週1時間. There is a culminating project, which each student will present in the eighth and final class. Their job is to design an animal that can travel from the Arctic Circle in Canada, down through the Rocky Mountains of Canada, through the temperate forests of the Pacific Northwestern USA, down through the deserts of Southern USA, and through, over, OR around central America to end at the lush rainforests of Costa Rica. They should draw this animal, label its adaptations, and be able to verbally explain to the class why they chose each specific characteristic. This project should take approximately 1-3 hours to complete

Welcome to "Animal Adaptations: Surviving a Journey Through North and Central America"! In this 8-class course, students will learn all about some fascinating and exciting adaptations that animals have to survive in their different environments. The course culminates in each student designing and presenting their very own animal who must survive a long, difficult journey through several different habitat types beginning in the Arctic Circle of Canada, travelling down through the Rocky Mountains, into the desert of the southwestern USA, and through/around central America to the lush rainforests of Costa Rica. The lessons in this course are designed in a part lecture-style, part discussion-style fashion, with some short video clips throughout. Every lesson includes a handout which students can use to document their learning throughout the course. In addition, all learners are provided unlimited web access to the lesson slides after each class-- no need to worry about writing all the information down!

Lesson 1: Adaptation? What's That?! -- Students will be introduced to some key vocabulary that we will use throughout this course. They will learn about the types of adaptations (behavioural, physiological, and structural), and begin to practice identifying some adaptations. They will learn about the fun culminating course project, and practice creating an animal with useful adaptations in a fun activity!

Lesson 2: Polar "Brrrr"s and More: Polar and Antarctic Animals -- Students will learn about cold habitats and some special adaptations that animals in these habitats have. We will examine polar bears, penguins, seals, and more.

Lesson 3: Feelin' Hot, Hot, Hot -- Students will learn about desert habitats and some special adaptations that animals in these habitats have. We will examine kangaroo mice, fennec foxes, and more.

Lesson 4: Time For a Swim -- Students will learn about marine habitats, and the different types of animals that can dwell in these environments. We will examine some adaptations of fish, sharks, dolphins, and more.

Lesson 5: I Believe I Can Fly -- Students will learn about animals who are able to fly, and some of their awesome adaptations! We will discuss different bird species, bats, and even flying squirrels. We will also briefly look at WHY some male birds are so beautiful and colourful.

Lesson 6: A Walk in the Forest -- Students will learn about temperate forest habitats, which is a very common habitat in North America! We will examine some familiar animals like white-tailed deer, black bears, and owls for example, and some adaptations they have for surviving in the woods.

Lesson 7: Ain't No Mountain High Enough -- Students will learn about mountain habitats, such as North America's own Rocky Mountains. We will learn about some adaptations of cougars, lynx, bighorn sheep, and more!

Lesson 8: Project Presentations -- In this lesson, students will each have an opportunity to show the class their uniquely designed animal. They will each be given some time to explain the adaptations they chose for their animal, and how each adaptation will help the animal on their journey through the different habitats.

学習到達目標

The aim of this course package is to foster students' interest in biology, specifically zoology, and allow students to gain a deeper comprehension of how animals' adaptations help them to survive in their habitats. They will be able to describe some of the basic types and examples of animal adaptations. They will also be able to identify a wide variety of adaptations and be able to explain HOW each adaptation can help the species. They will leave this course with an enhanced knowledge of how and why different animals have so many different amazing adaptations!

Hello everyone! My name is Annette and I'm a teacher originally from Toronto, Canada, but currently located in Nicaragua.

I have both passion AND experience teaching a wide variety of science topics. I developed an intense interest in geological and biological sciences from a very young age, and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) and a Bachelor of Education, both from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have two years' in-school experience teaching Geography, Biology, and General Science for grades 7-13 in Canada and England, and three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language online. I’ve been teaching classes in my subject areas here on Outschool for four years. However, I've been working with children in a variety of other settings for over 13 years! Here on Outschool, I offer a range of science classes and courses for approximately 10-16 year olds. I am also queer and I'm VERY passionate about providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming class environment for all of my students. My classroom is a place for all who need a safe space to learn.

*Please note:
-I always do my best to respond to any messages or questions within 24 hours
-All refunds follow Outschool's moderate refund policy. Please contact me directly for extenuating circumstances
-For learners outside of the set age range, or for learners with special requests or needs, feel free to contact me! I always do my best to accommodate every learner.
-All classes are designed to run for the designated amount of time. However, depending on number of learners and learner personalities, class may run slightly over or slightly under time.
-Absolutely NO homophobia, transphobia, racism, or bullying of any kind will be tolerated in my classes. Students who display such behaviour will be immediately removed from class with no refund.

When I'm not teaching I enjoy spending time outdoors, especially surfing and hiking. I also enjoy reading, crocheting, and relaxing with my cat Loki when I’m not outside. I also love travelling and have visited 37 different countries!
