このクラスで学べること
This course will be a lot of fun and very informative- the best combination if you ask me! Students will read a variety of Greek Myths- all focused on the major Greek Gods and Goddesses. We will learn about Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hades, Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Hermes, and Hestia. After learning about these gods through story-telling, students will develop knowledge about their favorite Goddess or God through interactive role-playing. Finally, students will create trading cards for all the gods using their new knowledge. We will also discuss the connections between the Ancient Gods and Goddesses and their modern-day counterparts: Superheroes! Class 1: Welcome to Ancient Greece In Week 1, students will build background knowledge about Ancient Greece. This week is important to build context for the Gods and Goddesses we will learn about in subsequent weeks. In addition, we will get an overview of the Greek Gods and Goddesses by looking at a family tree. Class 2 & 3: Climbing Mount Olympus In Week 2 and 3, students will learn about the Greek Gods and Goddesses who ruled from Mount Olympus in depth. We will read a variety of stories from the text, D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. Using a simple note catcher, students will try and identify the superpowers of each God and Goddess. Class 4 & 5: Time to Rule! In Week 4 and 5, students will work on creating trading cards for all the Greek Gods and Goddesses we have learned about. These trading cards will include a student created image, a list of their "superpowers", and a description of their defining characteristics. After creating these cards, some of which will need to be finished outside of class, we will be playing a game with them where students will have the chance to demonstrate their knowledge. For example, I might say, “Oh no! The Parthenon is on fire, which Greek God or Goddess would you send to save the people of Greece?” There are many right answers here, but Poseidon would be a good choice since he is the God of the Sea and can bring water to put out the fire! Week 6: Long-Lasting Legacy In Week 6, students will dig deeper into our study of Greek Gods and Goddesses by selecting another Greek God or Goddess and attempting to come up with that God's "long-lasting legacy" by finding connections to modern day- Percy Jackson, super heroes etc. Students will choose their favorite God or Goddess so far or a brand new God or Goddess they have interest in and students will conduct research out of class on their legend and then present their findings in the last class! The last class may end early depending on enrollment.

There will be mature themes in many of the myths we read (think PG-13+). In addition, there are some very dark Greek myths. I have done this class with 5th graders and they loved it! However, some of my more nervous kids got scared during stories about Hades, Pandora, etc. I would compare the scare level to Goosebumps. If your child can handle Goosebumps, they will have no trouble here! Please reach out to ask questions if you are unsure.
受講に必要なもの
Teacher Provided: I will provide note catchers for students to work from in the form of a google doc. Students can print this note catcher or they can work on google docs or any other document editor. In addition, I will scan copies of any stories that they will read for homework from D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. Required: Students need a pencil, coloring tools, and index cards to make their trading cards. Optional: While this is NOT required, having your own copy of our primary text, D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, would be helpful. The text is about $15 (as of today) on Amazon. However, this is totally optional! I will do my best to hold the text where students can see across the computer. *Note on Other Resources: There will be a few other sites integrated into the class. For example, during the first week, students will explore a digital family tree of the Greek Gods & Goddesses in class. In addition, students will look at excerpts from some graphic novels. Please reach out to me with any concerns. All additional sights have been pre-screened by me, but I am happy to share them with you as we go!

教師の専門知識と資格
In general, my expertise comes from my knowledge of instructional practices. I am in my 9th year teaching in Baltimore City and am in my final semester of an MAT program at Johns Hopkins University. I have taught Social Studies, including a unit on Ancient Greece, for the past three years. Also, I have specific knowledge on this topic from my own childhood. As a kid, I loved Ancient Greek culture and mythology (and Roman and Egyptian culture). Actually, it was a bit of an obsession for me. I used to pore over D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths and I would create paper dolls for all of my favorite Goddesses and Gods (Athena is my number 1)!
My instructional knowledge will help me design an excellent course rooted in research-based best practices and my passion for ancient cultures and mythology will help me make this class a whole lot of fun! When the teacher is passionate about a topic, it makes the students passionate about a topic!
