DESCRIPTION: This class has a Saturnalia Party while it discusses the ancient Roman holiday called Saturnalia. Saturnalia, held in mid-December, is an ancient Roman festival honoring the agricultural god Saturn. Saturnalia celebrations are believed to be the source of many of the traditions we now associate with modern winter holidays and traditions. Saturnalia, the most popular holiday on the ancient Roman calendar, derived from older farming-related rituals of midwinter and the winter solstice, especially the practice of offering gifts or sacrifices to the gods during the winter sowing season. Students will learn about the holiday and customs surrounding it. They will compare and contrast similarities between ancient Saturnalia traditions and modern winter traditions still practiced today. Part of this will include analyzing Latin holiday words that have roots in English today. Students will make a (paper) Pileus Cap. (pattern provided). Learners are encouraged to wear Roman dress and bring Roman snacks such as meats, bread and fruit.
