Students will not need previous Egyptian experience, nor should they be proficient readers. Decoding (sound recognition and blending) is a vital skill, and I will be there to assist them 100% of the way. I'll be reading the majority of the slides to them and engaging them a long the way with questions, imaginative thought, field trips, and quizzes. During our adventure students will be introduced to elements that are customary to ancient Egyptian culture. These include but are not limited to: • geography • contributions • daily life • transportation •architecture •rituals •and spiritual beliefs This blended class is designed to be interactive and engaging. Throughout our adventures in Egypt we will: • read the presentation slides together • address phonetic recognition with digraphs • introduce math concepts with skip counting • strengthen comprehension skills by asking and answering questions directly related to the class material • make inferences based on images • address and define key vocabulary words • make group decisions that will help us beat D'Nile the Crocodile • strengthen leadership skills by allowing each student a turn to take a lead role in facilitating group responses We learn interesting facts! Did you know that the ancient Egyptians believed the scarab beetle protected them from harm? The scarab is also a variety of dung beetle! We have battles! We will encounter a pesky character who goes by the name of D'Nile the Crocodile. He is mighty proud of his rank on the Nile and doesn't take kindly to outsiders. He'll stop us in our tracks several times, and in order to continue along our way we'll have to answer his questions. We can't let him ruin our trip! Do you think we can beat him? At the end of our journey we will play an interactive game of ancient Egyptian bingo using our new found vocabulary words! The fun continues even after class is over! Complete your very own ancient explorer passport as an extension activity at home!

• Comprehension practice by asking questions related to key details

By the end of this class students will be able to:
• Identify Africa on a map
• Explain who the ancient Egyptian people were
• List the contributions they made to modern society
• Describe in their own words why the ancient Egyptians were so important
• Understand and define key vocabulary words

We will be briefly discussing the mummification process, however not in detail. Students will be exposed to the basic idea of mummification: removal of the organs and placing them in canopic jars, wrapping of the body in linen cloth, and the placement of the body in the sarcophagus/tomb.

The only supplies you'll need for this class is your body and your listening ears! The bingo game is played using Google Slides and works best on a computer or laptop. If you can avoid using a tablet or mobile phone that would be best.
