このクラスで学べること

Welcome!!

* This is an intermediate/advanced class*

This course is designed for your learner to learn proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
***In this class we do not learn through a list of vocabulary words.***
The focus of the class is that students will learn one sentence at a time. We focus on high frequency words. The goal is for students to be able to use words in context. If students can see how to use the words appropriately in ASL in sentences, then students will be able to produce the language as well.
Each week we will do a different story in ASL. Students will learn the vocabulary as we do the stories. Students will also learn how to fingerspell through the different stories. Students are encouraged to ask questions at the end of class. This class is a good fit for a learner that desires to learn the language as a second language.

Week 1: Story 1
Review appropriate ways to respond. Explain signs to use for understanding. Begin with story one- students will be introduced to a story while going through the story students will answer questions.
Example:
There is a teenager named Gabby. She loves to drink coffee.
Class, what is the teenagers name? (Gabby)

The goal is repetition and focus on high frequency words that students will need to layer form common sentences.

Week 2: Story 2- Review appropriate ways to respond. Explain signs to use for understanding. Begin with story one- students will be introduced to a story while going through the story students will answer questions.
Example:
There is a teenager named Gabby. She loves to drink coffee.

The goal is repetition and focus on high frequency words that students will need to layer form common sentences.

Week 4:

Greetings!

My name is Myra Coria. My passions in life are American Sign Language, Spanish and English. Besides teaching, I also enjoy playing tennis and drinking coffee. I am thrilled to share my knowledge about these subjects with you and your student.

I began learning sign language at the age of 14. So, I know the importance of getting started at a young age! I learned by interpreting for parents at an Atlanta school for the Deaf. I interpreted from Sign Language to Spanish and I was fascinated by the language and deaf culture every time I went to class. From there, I was determined to become a teacher for the deaf.

I graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelors of Science in Special Education and a Master’s in Special Education with a concentration in Deaf Education.

I taught 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, and special education/Deaf education in public school for several years. I taught Spanish in high school at a private school. I also did homebound education for a few years (teaching at hospitals and homes for sick students). I have been a learning specialist for students with disabilities for five years.

Teaching languages for me is personal. I believe languages are bridges for all the cultures.

See you in class!
