In this one time class, students will learn about the parts of an insects. We will begin our discussion by creating a guided drawing of an ant and learning that all insects have three body parts and six legs. Learners will be immersed in scientific language as we use and write the scientific terms to describe these body parts (head, thorax, abdomen.) One of the things that I have learned in my 14 years of experience as an elementary teacher is that students learn best through repetition, song, and hands on experiences. I spent 10 years teaching in a STEM lab and I know the importance of keeping young learners moving. Children are fascinated by bugs and through this hands on approach, you will find your young learner searching outside for "bugs" to identify long after the lesson is over.

Young learners may need assistance with adding pipe cleaners to our project towards the end of class.
