Course Description - This course develops advanced algebra skills such as systems of equations, advanced polynomials, imaginary and complex numbers, quadratics, and concepts and includes the study of trigonometric functions. It also introduces matrices and their properties. The content of this course are important for students’ success on both the ACT and SAT as well as college mathematics entrance exams. Students who complete Algebra II should take Pre-Calculus next. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: * Use algebraic expressions to represent patterns, solve equations and inequalities, and solve absolute value equations. Students will also use functions to model real world situations, work with functions, and analyze transformations and characteristics of the four basic function families. * Find the vertex and standard form of a quadratic equation, factor a quadratic expression, solve a quadratic equation, and gain an understanding of complex numbers. * Classify, graph, and define end behavior of polynomial functions. Students will also be able to analyze the factored form of the polynomial and write polynomial function from its zeros, to solve polynomial function by graphing and factoring, to divide polynomials by long division and synthetic division, to model polynomial functions, and identify the effect of transformations of polynomial functions. * Work with radicals as a part of a function, equation, or by themselves. Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide functions, to find the composite of two functions, and to find the inverse of a relation or a function. * Understand the relationship between exponential and logarithmic function and to be able to model exponential and logarithmic functions. * Graph rational functions and solve rational equations * Using Matrices to organize data and solve problems UNIT 1 - Tools of Algebra UNIT 2 - Functions, Equations, and Graphs UNIT 3 - Linear Systems UNIT 4 - Matrices UNIT 5 - Quadratic Equations and Functions Requirements: Students should expect to have homework almost every day/night in this class. It is strongly recommended that students set aside at least 20 minutes per day for doing homework. Homework will be graded for understanding each week. Homework is 10% of overall grade. Quizzes and tests make up the majority of a students’ course grade. But remember, if you aren’t practicing the math, we are learning by doing your homework and class work on a regular basis, your scores on these quizzes/tests will more than likely be lower than they would be if you did do your homework every day. Quizzes are 25% and Tests are 60%of overall grade. Other possible grade includes attendance and participation. Attendance/participation is worth 5% of overall grade. If you ever feel you need more help than what you are receiving during our regularly scheduled classroom time, you should contact me and make arrangements to get extra help through e-mail or scheduling another time. I am very willing to help you. You just need to ask! Grading Scale Description A 90-100% Exceeds Expectations; Independent learner; superior work; all work completed on time at an exceptional level of quality and effort; B 80-89% Meets Expectations; Semi-independent learner; above average work; all work completed on time; did quality work with a few flaws; C 70-79% Passing but does not meet some standards; Dependent learner; average work; most completed on time showing average effort; D 60-69% Passing but only meets minimum standards; Dependent learner; average work; most completed late showing below average effort; F <60% Failing, does not meet minimum standards; Failure; does not meet standards or expectations.

Teacher Philosophy: I have been teaching for more than 20 years. I believe all students have the ability to learn mathematics. However, in order for this to happen, students need to be self-motivated and have the proper support from home, their teacher, and sometimes, even their friends. To do well in any math class, students need to really be involved while meeting on-line one day per week (by taking notes, asking and/or answering questions, working examples independently, and be willing to do all assigned work outside of class.
