Come listen to a great African Folktale passed down from generations. The students will engage in a story time session, and hear the tale about a boastful caterpillar who tricks everyone into believing he is bigger than he really is. The students will listen to the story and have an opportunity to ask questions at the end. They will have a time of poetry where they will recite "Knoxville, Tennessee" by Nikki Giovani The class is structured: Ice Breakers (i.e. Do you like ice cream of cake?) My educational background is in language and literacy (PhD). I am a professor of literacy practices and have taught reading instruction for over 15 years, prepared pre-service teaches for the profession of teaching, and was an elementary school teacher. I engage in many reading strategies and read a louds is one of them, along with reader's theater. Reader’s theater is a literacy strategy and performative tool I have implemented in all my classes (K-college); it is one of my areas of research; I have years of experience writing and directing plays in my classroom and doing community reader’s theater at the library. I have been part of children’s theater groups and theater courses (Improvisation for Teachers) at the college level.
