Come learn about Phillis Wheatley Peters - the first African American woman poet to publish a book of poems and to gain national and international attention! In this class, we will learn about her early life through a short visual presentation and read two of her poems, "An Hymn to the Morning and "An Hymn to the Evening" As a class, we will review Wheatley's use of rhyme scheme and literary devices in her poems and discuss her use of the pastoral mode. During this class, learners will use guided questions to develop their own six-line poem and have an opportunity at the end of class to share what they have written.  This is a great class for budding poets and those interested in learning more about varying styles of poetry and the poets famous for using them!
