In this class we will dive right into cartoon character design by starting off with the fundamentals of figure construction.  Through model sheets, discussion, and examples drawn in real-time, we'll begin to get you comfortable creating in a digital medium.  I'll show you the proper use of guidelines, line of action, and the importance of facial expressions.  My classes are interactive and fun, designed to give you the tools and confidence to create your own unique and original character designs!

 Instructor and class introductions.  Review of the Procreate interface and tools, and getting comfortable exploring the app.

Guidelines and Character Structure

 Designing the head, eyes and mouths. Understanding the importance of guidelines and head positioning. We will draw simple faces with easy to understand facial expression.

Let's build the Body!

 Building the framework of our characters. We will construct our characters using circles and guidelines to keep the proportions consistent, and refine the details as we progress.

Give Yourself A Hand!

 Drawing hands can be very frustrating for even the seasoned professional.  I'll guild you step-by-step and break down basic hand positions that's easy to follow. I'll show you how to design your hands holding and interacting properly with objects and props.

We will be using the iPad app "Procreate" for this class. Procreate requires a one-time purchase ($12.99) for use. This app has no pop-up ads or in-app purchases.

受講の前提条件

Basic knowledge of Procreate or similar digital art programs is beneficial - but not required. We'll review the basics!

One of the following:
iPad Pro (12.9-in., 11-in., and 10.5-in. models)
iPad (6th Generation, 2018)
iPad Mini 4

Apple Pencil or Compatible Stylus (hard-tipped)

Paper and pencil is ok, but the class will be taught utilizing the Procreate app.

教師の専門知識と資格

My formal training was obtained at the California Institute of the Arts where I studied Color and Design, Character Design, Storyboarding and Story/Development, Animation, Cartooning and Illustration.  My art background also includes 2D and 3D digital arts and graphic design; painting in watercolors, oils, and acrylics; drawing with charcoal and pastels; toy design; and sculpting.  For 12 years, I was an art teacher at the Wallingford Art Center where I taught traditional arts to children and adults.  Since 2003, I have also worked with Fleming Tech Camps and ID Tech as a digital graphic artist and teacher for their camps, classes, and after school programs, as well as teaching on Outschool.  In addition to my teaching I have also illustrated two children's books through Schiffer Publishing ("Monkey of the Month" and "My Father Flies").  I have two series of webcomics and continue to do graphic design, sculpting and illustration work.
