This class will focus on reading and analyzing books, poems, plays, and short stories taken from recommended reading lists for college-bound students. This will be a book-based, writing-intensive course which will focus on helping students hone their critical thinking skills and writing abilities. Specifically, we will be reading through a unit of some of the most famous (and troubled) literary heroes. Then, we'll dive into the Golden Age of mystery and read stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Class will require weekly reading assignments and in-class discussion. We will also complete two papers in the class divided up into 4 pieces each with lots of feedback in between.

In several of our stories, there is violence described. Beowulf, Macbeth, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Murder on the Orient Express all contain descriptions of violence and death.

Beowulf translated by either Burton Raffel or Seamus Heaney, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Macbeth by Shakespeare, Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, and The Hound of Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle You will also need to have something to write with and take notes on during class.
