This interactive ongoing class provides learners (ages 14-18) creative opportunities to advance their public speaking talents with a TED speaker and speech coach. This class is for students with public speaking and/or performing experience.

This public speaking course provides students with advanced speaking skills creative opportunities to (1) organize their ideas for a speech presentation, (2) deliver a quality speech, and (3) give and receive positive speech feedback. 

Advanced speaking skill practice includes:
Week #1 - ALL ABOUT ME SPEECH /  Learners introduce themselves to others and craft a quality speech about themselves.

Weeks #2 & #3 - INTERVIEW SKILLS - Learners will ask and respond to interview questions. 

Week #4 - STORYTELLING  / Learners will practice speaking with expression using props and gestures.

Week #5 - DEMONSTRATION SPEEECH / Learners will use words and props to explain how to complete a task.

Week #6 - IMPROVISATION / Learners use vocal variety and props to practice improvisation skills.

Week #7 - INFORMATIONAL SPEECH with PowerPoint/Google Slides - Learner create a presentation using PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Week #8 - MOTIVATIONAL STORYTELLING SPEECH - Learners use storytelling skills to describe a personal experience.  

Week #9 - PREPARE A TEDxYouth TALK - Learners describe a challenge they faced, how they faced a challenge, and what they learned from the experience. Learners are not required to submit their video to TEDxYouth.

Week #10 - CREATE A VIDEO - Learners will learn tools to PLAN A VIDEO that can be used as a script. 

Advanced speakers can also practice speeches they may be preparing for a contest, TED talk, podcast, video, or event.  Students and teacher will provide positive feedback.

Homework Offered
Learners with advanced speaking skills will practice public speaking skills and discuss how to prepare a variety of different speeches in each class. Speech preparation generally involve 15 - 60 minutes of time outside of class for different speeches in this course. Students will be provided with an outline for the development of their speeches. Each outline is designed for specific speeches (demonstration, storytelling, etc.). They will also be provided with examples of each speech outline. For students requesting a grade for this class, completion of the speech outline can provide evidence of homework completion. I am a certified elementary and secondary public speaking teacher with a doctorate in education. I will be happy to provide written grades and feedback for the outlines UPON REQUEST.

Assessments Offered
Class discussion, thumbs up / thumbs down, brainstorming, read aloud sharing, step-by-step check-ins of the outline progress throughout the class, guided practice to check for understanding, independent writing practice; self-assessment, positive feedback to and from students in the class Assessments of student performance and understanding of speech construction can be provided to students requesting a grade UPON REQUEST.

If your child is taking homeschool classes or need credit to meet school expectations, I can provide your child with a letter grade and a certificate of completion UPON REQUEST. I am a certified teacher. I have 30+ years of teaching experience in K-12 classrooms and as an online teacher. I have a doctorate in educational leadership and an EdS, MS, and BS in education. I am cross-certified in elementary education as well as secondary language arts, speech and theater, and science education. * Speech writing skills.  Students can enroll in my "Create an Awesome Outline for a Speech, Presentation, or Report" class.
* Participation in a public speaking class

* "My Speech Outline" (created by Dr. Julie Connor, Ed.D.; provided to students before class)
* Additional resources related to the week's topic will be provided to each student prior to class.
* Speech topic PowerPoint presentations created by Dr. Julie Connor, Ed.D. will be shared with students to guide conversations during each class session.
