Ancient Greeks believed that philosophy begins with wonder. Young learners make excellent philosophers because they naturally wonder about many things! In this course, we dive even deeper into some of our favorite philosophical questions to explore and foster that sense of wonder. Philosophy means “love of wisdom” and through this course, your young learners will become wise about themselves, the people around us, and the world we live in. We will explore abstract ideas that philosophers have been discussing for centuries! Advanced Philosophy I: Social Justice in the Face of Violence We know that people do not always treat each other justly. When we are treated unjustly what is the best way to "fight back"? We will analyze the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and others like him to dive into the concept of social justice. Class 1: Introduction to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the concept of Social Justice. Students should be prepared to share their initial opinions on the topic of social justice and violence. Students will use short readings by Martin Luther King, Jr. from his work A Testament of Hope to analyze and discuss. Students will need to obtain a copy of the text in order to select passages for analysis. Class 2 & 3: Ongoing discussion and analysis of the passages and readings introduced during Class 1 from the following perspectives: Historical, Psychological, and Philosophical. This class IS a discussion course. Students should be prepared to verbally share their thoughts, ideas, and analyses about the readings and questions posed by the instructor throughout the class. Students should also feel free to pose questions of their own!
