このクラスで学べること

Abstract art gives learners an opportunity to create for the sake of creating. It’s a wonderful skill for expressing one’s self, and developing as a creative. It also allows artists to developers their own unique style.

In this ongoing class, we will explore abstract art. There are many different approaches to abstract art, so every week we will focus on a different prompt, method or medium.

Art classes usually teach artists to paint and draw realistically. This is wonderful. I actually teach many of these classes. However, I find abstract art to be wonderful in different ways. It is more experimental and usually more forgiving than traditional art. It allows artists to be more free and expressive with artwork, and this allows artists to embrace imperfections, experiment, play and create in a completely different way. Mistakes can be embraced and even celebrated. It also helps learners explore and learn new mediums, and develop as a more well rounded creative/artist. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!

This class is wonderful for artists of all experience levels. No, artistic experience is required to take this class. Never held a paintbrush, that’s ok! Learners with more artistic experience are likely to have more success… but this is not always the case. Sometimes learners who have lots of technical art training actually struggle with abstract art because it deviates from traditional methods and from representational art. This was my personal experience. When I started creating abstract art I really struggled with the change, but now I absolutely LOVE IT!

Here is a list of the different topics techniques or prompts we will be focussing on every week.

I love to teach art, and specialize in drawing (wide variety of styles and techniques), procreate, watercolour, and acrylic painting. When I teach, I like to lead by example. This means that I draw, paint and create with my students. Throughout class I make myself available for questions, assistance and feedback.

I’ve been teaching art for over 5 years, and I have been creating art professionally since 2011. I have illustrated marketing materials for Denny’s, Newman’s Own, Duane Reade, Discovery Children’s Museum, The Mendes Foundation and other clients.

I also have extensive experience in advertising. I’ve been working as an art director (now creative director) for over 17 years. I worked in New York City for 10 years, Cambodia for one, and I currently work remotely out of my home office in Canada. In my advertising career I've made TV commercials, print campaigns, radio spots, online ads, videos and billboards (even some in Time Square.) I love thinking of cool ideas and bringing them to life. I am excited to share this skill with my students.

I believe that art is more than an applicable workplace skill. Art is a form of healthy self-expression and personal reflection. I also believe that art teaches the importance of patience and persistence. It is an education for the mind and soul.

For me, art is meditative. I own dozens of sketchbooks filled with drawings I’ve done throughout the years. Many pages contains a memory, emotion, thought or experience. As a mother, I find additional inspiration through my daughter and new son.

Art is everywhere, if you look for it. Children especially have a gift for finding beauty in the world. I hope to harness this gift so every child in my class can find their own unique, artistic voice.
