Each week we will look at a different group of elements. We will learn about what they have in common, how they were discovered, where they can be found, and then focus on several examples from the group in detail. 
Students will have a final project about an element of their choice. 

Each lesson we will examine examples of specific elements and explore questions such as, but not limited to:
 - What is an element?
 - How is the periodic table of elements organized? 
 - What does it mean to be radioactive?
 - Why is carbon important to life?
 - What uses are there for different elements?
 - What are atoms made of?

Final Project:
Students will complete a final project on an element of their choice. They have creative options on how to complete the project and will collaborate with the instructor to determine what format works best for their learning style.  Students will share their project with their classmates in the final meeting, respond to questions and comments, and ask questions about their classmates’ projects.   

This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through an image and video filled presentation and discussion. Students’ participation and questions are regularly encouraged. Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity.
