In this class, students will explore what life was like on the frontier in the late 1800's by completing extension activities aligned to the chapters of "Little House in the Big Woods". Chapters will be assigned for reading (or listening) outside of class each week. An interactive notebook (or lapbook) will be provided by the instructor. Some of the reading response prompts and exercises will be assigned for homework, and some will be completed during class. Class time will be very interactive and focus on activities that enrich the material provided in Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic novel. WEEK ONE: Pre-reading activities and author study -Learn about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder -Make predictions and play pre-reading activities -create a history timeline WEEK TWO: Little House in the Big Woods/ Winter Days and Winter Nights -Discussion of reader's response questions/ vocabulary -re-create the house art activity -butter making science experiment WEEK THREE: The Long Rifle/ Christmas -Guided writing activity (explanatory essay) -Compare and contrast modern holidays and Christmas on the frontier -begin recipe book WEEK FOUR: Sundays/ Two Big Bears -Discussion of reader's response prompts - Learn about pioneer music WEEK FIVE: The Sugar Snow -Discussion of reader's response -take a virtual field trip to an arboretum where students will learn first-hand how maple syrup is made (conduct an optional taste test if you have grade A maple syrup on hand) -Guided writing activity of the process WEEK SIX: Dance at Granpa's -Discussion/ vocabulary -Try your hand at square dancing! -Character traits activity WEEK SEVEN: Going to Town -Discussion/ vocabulary -interactive pioneer town activity WEEK EIGHT: Summertime/ Harvest -Discussion/ vocabulary -Guided narrative writing prompt -science lesson WEEK NINE: The Wonderful Machine -Discussion/vocabulary -meet a real farmer; compare/contrast farming methods then and now WEEK TEN: The Deer in the Woods -Discussion/vocabulary -Field guide art activity *Cover photo was taken by Mike Petrucci

Students need a copy of the book "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder, a notebook or binder with loose leaf paper, art supplies (crayons/colored pencils, watercolors, a few sheets of colored felt, popsicle sticks, cotton) and an empty glass jar (a clean baby food jar works great) for our butter making experiment. An interactive notebook / lapbook worksheets will be provided by the instructor.

I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.Ed. in Special Education with a level 2 certificate as a Wilson Reading System instructor (a multi-sensory reading/phonics program). I taught second grade through eighth grade over the course of fifteen years in the public school system. Currently, I'm a homeschooling mother of three.
I have a passion for teaching Reading and Writing and trying to instill this passion in my students. I love the creative side of teaching and enjoy making my classes as interactive as possible.
If I am not teaching or spending time with my family, I can be found with my nose in a book or testing new allergy-friendly baking recipes!
