Godzilla might be the best-known movie monster, but he was far from the first. In this class, we will explore the early monster films that started it all, as well as some kaiju era non-Godzilla films and contemporary and modern classics from around the world. We will learn about monsters on the silver screen with a mixture of slides, short video clips, and discussion. Films to include: Die Nibelungen: Siegfried (Fritz Lang, 1924) Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931) The Beast From 20000 Fathoms (Eugene Lourie, 1953) Them! (Gordon Douglas, 1954) Jason and the Argonauts (Don Chaffey, 1963) War of the Gargantuas (Ishiro Honda, 1966) Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979) Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg,1993) Pacific Rim (Guillermo del Toro, 2013) It is not required that learners have viewed each of the movies listed. We will briefly discuss plot, monster characteristics, and cultural relativity/impacts during class. Please note parental guidance statement below regarding the viewing of short video clips. I am looking forward to exploring monsters in film with you!

Many of the films discussed hold ratings of PG-13. Short video clips sourced from youtube will be shared via my screen for each film listed in the class description. These clips will be free from language and otherwise inappropriate content but will likely depict a level of violence and/or gore indicative of monster movies.

Hello! My name is Rebecca and I LOVE teaching! I have a Bachelor of Science in Education and am in the process of earning my Master of Science in Reading Education. I love creating and adapting my own curricula to make learning engaging and fun for the virtual learner and believe that providing interactive, organized, and thoughtful instruction in a supportive environment can pave the way for even the most hesitant student. It is my philosophy that learning happens in many ways, so, naturally, teaching should, too! My classes incorporate a variety of teaching tools to provide for different learning styles.
