Students will be engaged in weekly creative projects and lively discussions while collaborating with their peers to design their own fashion brand. The class will focus on guiding students to find their artistic voice and unique perspective with reference to the inspirational designs from Karl Lagerfeld, while learning fundamental elements and principles with a fun and pragmatic approach. Students will study the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld and his contributions to the fashion industry. They will learn progressively how to build a fashion collection in their signature style, by creating their own designs inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s most iconic looks. Following the basic elements and principles of fashion design, students will create standout pieces that are both visually intriguing and dynamic. The four elements include: - color - line - shape/ form - texture The five principles include: - Balance - Rhythm - Harmony (Unity) - Emphasis - Proportion and scale This class is designed for students who aspire to become creative directors, accessory designers, costume designers, material researchers and fashion illustrators. Other career roles include marketing, styling, merchandising, content development, curatorial work, and fashion research and writing. Schedule Week 1 - Color Students will choose a color story and season for their designs. They will use color as the foundation for their designs. Week 2 - Balance Students will pull inspiration from an iconic look while incorporating balance into the design based on symmetry. They will learn about the distribution of visual weight in an outfit, how it can be used to emphasize colors, texture and stability. Week 3 - Rhythm Students will learn the importance of rhythm in a collection while designing their own repetition of visual patterns inspired by an iconic look. They can discuss the look and feel they are trying to convey and how they would like this to be expressed in their designs. Week 4 - Harmony Students will learn the importance of Harmony in a fashion collection by applying a visually appealing effect of combining similar or related elements, until the ensemble achieves visual unity. Week 5 - Emphasis Students will focus on the emphasis of the look which creates a center of interest in a garment. They will choose a collection name that reflects the focal idea behind their chosen colors, shapes, and details. Week 6 - Proportion & Scale Students will learn the importance of garment proportion in relationship to body and how it alters the appearance. It is also the combination of items and their relationship together once put onto the body. Week 7 - Accessories Students will share and discuss how accessories can change the mood of the garment design while adding accessories to unify their looks to complete a cohesive collection. Week 8 - Logo Design, Fashion Show & Critique Students will design logos that speak to their brands and collections. They will present their entire collection while discussing the process which includes, season, color story, inspiration, and collection name. Learners will be encouraged to comment on each other’s work. _________________________________________________________________ Please read below for frequently-asked questions on our policies: Mandatory Video Check-In Video check-in is mandatory for safety purposes per Outschool policy. Students are required to have their cameras on to allow the teacher to check in and verify each learner. After check-in, students have the option of either turning off their camera or leaving it on, whatever is their preference. Younger learners are highly encouraged to leave their cameras on. Missed Classes & Refunds All our classes are backed by the ‘Limited’ refund policy. Parents may withdraw up to a week before class starts with a full refund OR within 24 hours of purchase. In the event a learner misses a class, recordings are made available in each classroom. Students are more than welcomed to reach out for any questions and share their work in the classroom. Late/ Missed Class All classes will begin on time as long as one learner is in the classroom. In the event that no students are in the classroom at the assigned class time, the teacher will leave a message in the classroom and exit after ten minutes of waiting per Outschool policy. Minimum Enrollment & Class Cancellation A minimum of two learners is required for every class to run. In the event that we have to cancel a class, parents will be notified within 24 hours of class. Learners will have the option of either transferring to a more populated section of the same class or receiving a full refund, whichever is preferred. Technical Difficulties In the event of class delay/ cancellations due to unforeseeable technical issues, all families will be notified and a make-up section will be posted, or a refund will be issued if a make-up class cannot be scheduled.

Teacher Allie May is a contemporary artist who loves to indulge in all mediums, but focuses most on drawing and painting. She is a graduate student in the BFA program at California State University Long Beach, and aims to pursue a career in teaching art. Her art influence began at a young age, but she considers herself “self-taught.” Allie is passionate about encouraging students to master the fundamental skills and technical aspects of creating, but also develop a style that is unique to each student. Her promise is to encourage a mindset where students are confident in themselves and their ability to create.
Teacher Palm is a professional fashion and costume designer familiar with the complete product creation life cycle from initial concept to constructed design. She holds a degree in Fashion Design from The Parsons School of Design in New York. In addition to over 10 years of teaching art and fashion, she is also experienced in staging collections in numerous international Fashion Shows for luxury clients including Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Ann Taylor and Kenneth Cole. She gained valuable industry experience in the capacity of Creative Consultant for designers, theaters and art schools. Palm is also proficient in a wide range of fine arts such as watercolor, oil, pencil, pastel, etc. and approaches her teachings with a calm mind, optimism and positive affirmation.
Teacher Angela is a versatile graphic artist who holds a BFA in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her expertise extends to various art forms, including still life, landscape, and figure drawing. She is also skilled in fashion, 3D clay design, animation, and photography. Teacher Angela is known for fostering an environment that encourages her students to think beyond conventional boundaries, recognizing the profound impact of creativity on learning and development.
