Description
For six weeks, learners will meet twice a week to develop 4th and 5th grade reading, grammar, and writing fundamentals. Students will build reading comprehension, vocabulary, and understanding of the writing process, as well as how to become independent readers and writers.

Learners will work on fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary while reading and writing. They'll learn to identify the subject, describe people and surroundings, make conclusions from the text, and compare different characters' points of view. A major emphasis is placed on grammar, which includes subject-verb agreement, the use of complete sentences rather than run-on phrases and fragments, and the right usage of commonly misunderstood vocabulary. Weekly writing tasks allow students to practice writing a persuasive essay.

Class Experience
Each week, the first lesson will focus on specific reading skills, followed by grammar and writing in the second lesson. (See the chart below for weekly focus skills by week.) Learners will develop comprehension skills through reading and answering guided discussion questions, expand grammar skills, learn how to proofread a text carefully, and finally enrich creative writing skills.

Each lesson will follow the same basic routine.

15-minute mini-lesson (see sequence chart for weekly focus skill) {I do…}

30-minute activity
(Day 1) Reading passage followed by an activity to practice the focus skill. {We do…}
(Day 2) Writing independently, meeting with Teacher Robin or peers to seek assistance, sharing, or assisting others to include the focus skill in our writing. {We do…}

15-minute group discussion
(Day 1) Learners will participate in a discussion about what they have learned about the focus skill and how this will be used cross-curricular. {You do…}

As an elementary school teacher for nearly 25 years, I've taught a wide range of subjects and grade levels including several years as a combination 4th/5th-grade teacher. During this time, in planning to meet the needs of all students, I found that teaching reading, writing, and grammar at the 4th and 5th grade level was not much different, and could easily be taught simultaneously.
