This is a comprehensive reading enrichment class designed to develop reading fluency and expression, comprehension skills, related reading and language skills and written responses to literature based on Raz-kids online stories. Raz-kids is a widely used onlyline reading program using leveled stories based on the Fountas and Pinnell reading scale. The first class of each week will begin with an exploration of ten to twelve vocabulary words related to the story of the week, giving attention to spelling, part of speech and multiple meanings of each word. Next the class will engage in a discussion designed to peak the students interest in the topic of the story that they are about to read. Then the class will take turns reading the story orally using good tone and expression. Role playing activities help improve these skills may be added as needed for each story. The first class of the week will end with comprehension discussion using a hierarchy of questions ranging from simple recall to critical thinking skills. The second class of each week will focus on language skill, reading skills and writing skills. Students will engage in a variety of activities that cover skills such as affixes, synonyms and antonyms, prepositional phrases, sequence of events, fact or opinion, inference, summarizing, main idea and details.
