Class Experience
This is a full year of 4th-grade curriculum taught by a National Board Certified Teacher. We will cover 4th-grade standards in ELA (phonics, reading, writing, grammar, spelling).
In ELA, we will read fiction/non-fiction books. This class meets for 30 minutes 1x a week.
In ELA, I will cover a unit/theme each week.

Our weekly schedule is as follows, with exceptions during longer writing or reading assignments:

Tuesday:
Reading: Activate Prior Knowledge, Build Background, Make Predictions, Learn New Vocabulary, Read, Learn New Grammar Rules, and Learn a Phonics Skill or Practice Spelling.
Here is an example of the first 4 weeks:

Week of August 18th

Week of August 25th

Reading: The students will be introduced to the new story, Awesome Ants, by Rus Buyok. We will learn new vocabulary. We will activate prior knowledge by discussing what we already know about ants. We will create a KWL chart about Ants, including: What do we already know? What do we want to learn?

Week of September 1st

Reading: The students will be introduced to the new story, Arthur's Bad-News Day, by Lara Henderson Megard. We will learn new vocabulary and make predictions using the story's vocabulary and title. We will activate prior knowledge by discussing what we already know about having a bad day. We will discuss how sometimes a bad thing becomes a good thing. Grammar: Introduction and Guided Practice on Exclamatory Sentences. Phonics Work: Introduction and Guided Practice on Open /Y/ that makes a long /e/ sound.
