NOTE: on my class page you will find science sections for grades 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5-6. Ask about sibling discounts! Each week in this class we will cover grade 3 social studies standards. This class will focus on social studies standards in the areas of communities, citizenship / civics, introduction to government, basic Colonial American history leading up to forming the United States of America, as well as the meaning behind US national symbols and where they are located. If time permits with student understanding of the above concepts we will also study geography and economics. I use songs, books, video clips and hands-on activities to create an interactive learning environment to help students stay engaged. The concepts under social studies can be harder concepts for learners to grasp - it’s not as cut and dry as a science topic. Due to this, there will be a lot of hands-on learning. Students will begin to understand the world they live in and discuss what their roles and responsibilities are. I have taught elementary level social studies for 12 years, including one year on Outschool, and believe in hands-on learning to help with student retention of materials. I have coached other teachers on how to use best practices for teaching elementary aged student understand and retain the most information possible. Due to my art therapy and special education background, I utilize various hands-on activities (cutting, pasting, making maps, coloring) to keep learners engaged.
Note: there will be no historically sensitive topics taught in this section. No Native American history (except as an "others thinker discussion), BLM / minority groups or other subjects where strong opinions would need to be discussed.
