In this ongoing class students will learn a new foundational skill for solving multiplication and division word problems. Students will be taught how to utilize the strategies of: Base 10, expanded form, repeated subtraction and addition, equal groups, and arrays. These strategies can be applied to both multiplication and division word problems and will help students better understand the foundations of multiplication and division which will better prepare them for more advanced word problems...
13 lessons//13 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Multiplication With Repeated AdditionStudents will use their knowledge of addition to begin multiplying.Week 2Lesson 2Multiplication With ArraysStudents will use the factors in a multiplication equation to draw arrays and multiply with accuracy.Week 3Lesson 3Multiplication With Base 10Students will learn how to draw base 10 blocks to create a visual representation to help them multiply.Week 4Lesson 4Multiplication With Equal GroupsStudents will use the factors of a multiplication equation to draw equal groups and multiply with ease.Week 5Lesson 5Multiplication With Expanded FormStudents will be able to expand a two digit number to multiply in a more simple way.Week 6Lesson 6Division With Repeated SubtractionStudents will use their knowledge of subtraction to begin dividing.Week 7Lesson 7Division With ArraysStudents will learn how to create an array from a division equation to divide with accuracy.Week 8Lesson 8Division With Equal GroupsStudents will use equal groups to solve division problems. This strategy provides students with a clear visual of how division works.Week 9Lesson 9Division With Fact FamiliesStudents will combine their knowledge of multiplication and division to divide and multiply quickly and with accuracy.Week 10Lesson 10Introduction to Remainders in DivisionStudents will learn how to divide when the numbers in their division equation do not divide perfectly.Week 11Lesson 11The Associative and Commutative Properties of MultiplicationStudents will learn how the associative and commutative properties of multiplication can help them when multiplying.Week 12Lesson 12The Distributive Property of MultiplicationStudents will learn how the distributive property of multiplication can help them when multiplying.Week 13Lesson 13Reviewing the Properties of MultiplicationStudents will revisit all three properties of multiplication and learn when to use each property.
- Students will be able to understand and apply foundational multiplication and division strategies to solve multiplication and division word problems.
