Sometimes it’s hard to know as a parent where your child is as a reader. Whether your child is in a traditional school setting, or you are a homeschool parent wanting to assess where your child is, this reading assessment is for you. As a reading teacher, reading assessment teacher, and ELA specialist of the last 13 years, I can confidently provide you the answers and information you need about your child as a reader.

In this one time, personalized assessment, I will administer a series of exercises designed to determine reading level, areas of strength and concern, specific data related to core reading skills, and informal observations that will help you get a common sense feel for how to best help your reader.

Additionally, after class you will be provided a report in parent friendly language sharing this information as well as tips and suggestions for where to go next. This can help you know with confidence that you as a homeschool parent are planning appropriate activities for your learner or help you support your child at home if they are in a traditional school setting. 

This assessment will take 45 minutes. After a quick icebreaker, we will begin by doing a read aloud of your child’s choice to build rapport and allow me to get a quick feel for where your child is performing to help me guide the rest of the assessment. Next, we will move into my formal assessment that will include spelling, reading ability, reading comprehension, phonics, and retell. Lastly, if time permits, we will do a quick writing assessment to give you even more information about your child as an ELA learner.

As an online teacher since 2018 and a reading specialist of 13 years, this class will be a relaxed environment designed to make your child feel at ease in order to be able to extract the most accurate picture of their skills. I assure you, I am experienced with diverse learners and the challenges that can be presented in an online environment. We will keep the class interactive and engaging to keep your child focused and attentive!
