How does someone prepare for adulthood? In this class, your student will be interviewed using two transition surveys as a guide. The specific goal is to help them think proactively about post secondary living (aka "adulting"). They will identify their goals (in the areas of living, learning, and working), explore current gaps, and identify actions needed to get where they would like to be. (I did this with numerous students in my past work as a middle school teacher. Helping these students was an absolute pleasure each and every time.) Topics covered include: -Skills currently demonstrated at home (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) -Working preferences (indoors or outdoors, work alone or with others, etc.) -Plans for improving job skills and increasing opportunities for employment -Job areas of interest -Plans for transportation -Learning (attendance, are assignments in on time, using planners and to-do lists) -Knowledge of budgeting/managing money Surveys will be attached in the classroom. Plan for students to complete one full survey during the half hour session, start the other interview, and then complete it with a parent/caregiver while discussing results. For this class, I teach using pre-planned questions while still leaving time for spontaneous positive interaction. No prior experience is needed to take this class. Students will enjoy thinking concretely through decisions adults have to make. Most of all, I hope they walk away with some insights to help them feel more prepared for adulthood!
