Welcome to 1-on-1 6th Grade Science! I am so excited to help you discover the fun and wonder of science! In this course we will cover physical science and prepare you for future science courses. Class Topics In this semester class we will cover the following topics: - Light and Matter - Thermal Energy - Weather - Climate - The Water Cycle Class Structure This course has three units that each begin with a 'phenomenon' or a mystery that students will be able to solve at the end of the unit...

- I can develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials (NGSS MS-PS4-2).
- I can gather and synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories (NGSS MS-LS1-8).
- I can develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed (NGSS MS-PS1-4).
- I can apply scientific principles to design, construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer (NGSS MS-PS3-3).
- I can plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample (NGSS MS-PS3-4).
- I can construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object (NGSS MS-PS3-5).
- I can develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials (NGSS MS-PS4-2).
- I can develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved (NGSS MS-ETS1-4).
- I can develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earth’s systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity (NGSS MS-ESS2-4).
- I can collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses results in changes in weather conditions (NGSS MS-ESS 2-5).
- I can develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates (NGSS MS-ESS2-6).
I am a certified teacher originally from Utah with both a bachelors and masters in science education. I have taught middle and high school science for the last 7 years and also had a position as a science specialist for a major district in Utah. In this position, I coached middle and high school science teachers across my district.
