Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Looking to help your learner improve their public speaking skills and confidence?

Each week we can either work together on a speech of the learner's choice (for example for a competition or school assignment), or a poem, with different speeches from either 'Monologues for Kids and Tweens', 'Monologues for Kids and Tweens II,' or 'Monologues for Teens', or Monologues for Teens II' by Mike Kimmel depending on your learner's age or a prose extract (such as from 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass', 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', 'Treasure island' or a selection of Charles Dickens' classic texts such as 'David Copperfield', 'Oliver Twist' and 'Great Expectations'). Depending on their age, and level of vocabularly.

I can help develop your learner's use of voice (with areas such as pitch, precision, pace, projection, volume, intonation, accent, emphasis, articulation/elocution, diction, tone, pauses, breath control, fluency, and expression), and their non-verbal expression (with areas such as posture, body language, gestures, facial expressions, stance, muscular tension, poise, and status) for public speaking, or presenting themselves better or we can work on these areas to sound, appear and ultimately build their confidence.

Each class will begin with some carefully chosen warm-ups (mouth exercises to improve their articulation and pronunciation), and then we'll look at different voice and non-verbal techniques each week.

As a fully qualified, experienced Confident Communcations Coach, Speech & Drama Tutor, Teacher (BAPA, PGCE), Professional Actor, and Director, who has also worked as many types of Presenter and used many of these techniques to build my own confidence and develop my use of voice and non-verbal presentation, I can give on the spot tips, and ideas where needed. Developing and adapting the class content live in class, or as learners' skills and needs develop week to week.

I will also be actively encouraging learners to ask and answer questions throughout classes too, so they will be building their more natural public speaking skills for areas like discussions and interviews, as well as more 'performance' ones.

If you would like to work with speeches by Mike Kimmel, I highly recommend learners purchase their own copy of one of these books (*details in the supply list). I can also supply copies of the speech by sharing my screen and in pdf form, if needed.

For learners that respond well to rewards I can offer bespoke pictures on my green screen background of their favorite things (in drawn, or photo form) as rewards for great focus, or if you prefer a virtual sticker system, or even something sent over each week in PDF form (a coloring sheet, certificate with the skill worked on, paper 'stickers' they can print out and collect. Depending on your thoughts, I can also include brain break activities, of coaching them to give their own made-up definition for a nonsense word (like 'What does Rotboe mean?'), answering would you rather questions (like 'Would you rather eat a sandwhich with no bread, or a burger with no bun? Why?', or icebreaker questions (like 'If you could have any animal in the world as a pet what would you choose? Why?'). I can include any or all of these throughout classes for when a learner has done particularly well, or needs a bit of a pause before re-focusing.

**If you are unable to find a suitable time in my class availability do please reach out, as I can often juggle my presenter filming schedule day to day, and week to week**

'I would like to thank you with an update, previously shy D achieved a place in the semi-finals for his year 6 speech competition! I saw him practicing with hand gestures, voice tone, and pauses that you taught him over his classes last term break. I am so pleased to see him breaking out of his shell and stepping up. Thank you'
