Acting is so fun, but the film and television industry can be tricky and not knowing what to do can be frustrating. I know. And not just because I'm a professional actor & acting teacher, but because I'm also a produced screenwriter and indy film director. (You can look me up on the IMDB!). For 40 years I have navigated the film and television industry, in the USA and Canada, both in front of and behind the camera. Now, after 4 years of teaching actors on Outschool, I realized there is a...
Students will learn how to navigate the difficult road to success as professional actor, screenwriter or filmmaker as well as learn useful tools and skills to hone their craft and build their confidence. They will also learn how important it is to build inner strength and get support and motivation from peers in such a competitive business. The worst thing we can do as artists is allow ourselves to brood over what seems like failure. When we find we are not alone, everything is a little easier. And that can be encouraging.
Welcome to our Group! We want all of our learners to feel comfortable, connected, and safe. That's why I have 4 rules I ask you to follow: Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Positive. Be Kind - Help all learners feel welcome and included. Learners from all over the world, with different backgrounds, races, ethnicities, abilities, gender identities, religions and body types, participate in our Group. Always be nice and make others, especially new learners, know that they belong and are welcome. Teasing, name calling, or bullying anybody in our community? Nope. Not happening here Be Safe - Keep your personal information private and never ask other learners for theirs. Personal things are personal. We want to keep you safe on Outschool, but we also want YOU to understand how to be safe when you're meeting other learners or teachers. Keep your full name, home address, gaming or social media name, email, and school name private. Be Respectful - Treat others how you want to be treated. Keep language clean and information you share safe. If you wouldn't say it or share with your grandma, don't do it here. Swear words, racy videos, and violent images are not allowed. Treat Outschool like a public place, and when in doubt, keep things covered. Be Positive - Give encouragement and praise. If you have feedback, remember the "feedback-sandwich." When you want to give constructive criticism to help your fellow actor improve, make sure you sandwich it between two things you really liked about thier performance. Here is an example: THE FEEDBACK SANDWICH EXAMPLE: 1) I really loved how deeply your character wanted to win the contest in their class election speech! 2) Maybe you could have looked at the students you were talking to a little more to give us an idea of how many other students were in the room? 3) But I laughed so hard at the end when you did the awkward moment. So funny!!"
Because this is an acting class, some learners may choose material that is a little older in nature because they want to practice emotional scenes when the stakes are a little higher. Or they may have an audition for a project that deals with older themes and they need to discuss them in this group. I will do my best to moderate this as much as possible but please be aware there may sometimes be be discussions around or performances that include teenage themes.

#Actingtip #Objective
In the Spotlight - Pro Hacks, Guidance & Advice for Actors is a community of learners that come together on Outschool to share what they’re learning, ask questions, participate in challenges, and get feedback on their projects
#Actingtip #Objective When doing a scene, instead of acting an emotion, ask yourself what your character might want in the scene. How will that change your performance?
But isn't acting all about emotions?? And what do you mean by what I want?? *so confused* lol
I can answer, I was in his coaching class! Like if you are a waiter in a restaurant taking an order from a Karen, you might just want to get home because you are sick of working there. So then you might be impatient in the scene. *I like cats*
