Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
Bienvenidos! Welcome!
In this 4 week FLEX class, we will learn to sound out words in Spanish. Each week will include videos, practice activities, and something extra!
We will start with individual sounds, then move onto syllables and special sounds. After that we will practice sounding out words before finishing up with reading full sentences, a story, and even have a go at some of the longest words in Spanish!
The main purpose of this class is pronunciation, but new vocabulary is included! I always say what the words we use translate to so that learners know what they're saying.
This class is perfect for brand new beginners, or those that just need some practice with pronunciation.

Here is a breakdown of the schedule and what is included in each week.
Week One: The Spanish alphabet and letter sounds. I will post a video covering all of the individual sounds in the Spanish alphabet. Learners will have an audio/video assignment to upload of alphabet practice.

Week Two: This week will discuss Spanish syllables and how to break words down into smaller parts. We will also cover the special accents for vowels. I will post a video explaining Spanish syllables and vowel accents. Learners will have an audio/video assignment to upload. Learners will have a practice game to play. I will post a list of the consonants, in order. I will start the game and say a syllable starting with the first consonant, the first learner will comment with a syllable using the next consonant, the second learner will use the third consonant, and the game will continue until we have completed the list.

Week Three: We will use our previous weeks to sound out real Spanish words this week. I will upload two videos, one video will be of how to sound out words, the other video will be a set of words and their meanings for student to use for their practice activity. Students will have a Kahoot! Challenge over the words from my second video. Students will have an audio/video assignment to complete.

Week Four: For our final week, we will use all of our new skills to practice reading full sentences and a short story in Spanish. I will upload a video read aloud set up so that learners practice reading each sentence/page before I read it. Students will have an audio/video assignment to upload. Our final week will also include a special bonus challenge with some long multi-syllable Spanish words for students to try!

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Alphabet
The first step in learning to pronounce words in Spanish is to learn the individual letters and their sounds. In this lesson, we will do just that. Once you feel confident in them, there is a set of slides for you to look at and upload an audio/video recording of yourself for feedback from me.
10 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Syllables
Now that you know the individual letter sounds, the next step is to combine them to create syllables. We will cover how to build them as well as go over the few trickier combinations you are likely to encounter. Once you have learned them, there is a practice activity for you to complete.
8 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Words and Vocabulary
This lesson will combine syllables into words and give you a video on the vocabulary words we used. I want you to learn to say the words and learn what they mean. There is a practice activity with both the reading and the vocabulary as well as a Kahoot! challenge.
13 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
Using Your New Skills
In the final week of this class, we will put together everything we have learned so far. There is a video over sentences and a story. Then there is a challenge of 8 of the longest words in Spanish. Your activities include: uploading an audio/video of you reading the challenge words and trying to translate the short story using the pictures and other clues I give you.
20 mins of video lessons
