Intermediate Level
In this 12-week Japanese course for enthusiastic lower intermediate learners, students will informally continue using the Japanese for Young People II and III series to cover important grammar structures and kanji study. At this lower intermediate level, students will be introduced many different grammar structures, vocabulary, and Kanji. They will learn to tackle unknown language with a sense of independence needed for long-term study of the Japanese language. This method of learning is defined as comprehensible input. What is comprehensible input? Comprehensible input refers to language that is slightly beyond a learner's current language level but still understandable, allowing them to acquire new language by being exposed to input that is mostly clear even if they don't understand every word or grammatical structure; essentially, it's the idea that language is best learned by being exposed to input that is just a bit more advanced than what you already know how to understand. While systematically learning level based grammar skills, students will also use resources from the Comprehensible Japanese curriculum to further their blossoming skills. (There is an $8 monthly subscription to Comprehensible Japanese that is highly recommended.) ⭐️Topics: JFYP II & *III - Textbook (Some of these topics will be review) Asking and Telling about Specific Events (L.24) Making an Invitation (L.25) Accepting / Declining an invitation (L.25) Expressing Ability, Possibility (L.26) Talking About Skills and Preferences (L.27) Choosing by Comparison (L.28) Talking About Injuries / Illness (L.28) Talking About Periods of Time (L.29) Talking About Order of Events (L.30) *Describing Successive Actions (L.31) *Talking About Plans (L.31) *Asking, Giving Permission (L.33) *Polite Refusals (L.33) *Showing Encouragement (L.33) ⭐️JFYP II Kanji Workbook: Kanji will mostly be assigned as homework with review taking place in class. We will cover L.24 - L.30 in this session so there will be no need to purchase JFYP III until next session. ⭐️ Comprehensible Japanese topics to be decided. **As always, our class will include games, videos, and opportunities to review vocabulary on the Quizlet and KAHOOT platforms. YouTube is used as a source in the classroom, but is always age appropriate and supports learning. There is no need to have an account to enjoy the videos in the classroom. All videos can be viewed directly from the classroom without going to the YouTube website.**
Learning Goals
Students will strengthen their understanding of grammar structures and kanji from Japanese for Young People II and parts of III, enabling them to communicate about a variety of topics.
Learners will improve their ability to tackle new and unknown language independently through exposure to slightly more advanced Japanese, guided by the principles of comprehensible input and supported by resources from Comprehensible Japanese.
