Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this course students will be introduced to the exciting world of Career Planning and Preparation! This fun, interactive 5-week course will provide learners will the opportunity to discover careers of interest, how to search and find job openings and how to apply to jobs. Together we will write impactful résumés and learn about cover letters and interview skills. How to present a professional image both in person and online will be discussed and demonstrated. This course will prepare learners to apply for part-time and eventually full-time employment. Career Planning and Preparation skills are lifelong skills that will travel with your learner as they grow. Class structure will involve teaching, interactive discussions, skill practice, power point presentations and short video clips. Questions are always welcome and encouraged! Classes will be tailored and adjusted to be as specific to the interests of the class participants as possible. Week 1 Welcome! -Introductions & Expectations -Discovering Exciting Career Opportunities -Finding Job Openings Week 2 Résumés are Fun… really, they are! -Résumé Writing Week 3 What is a Cover Letter? -Cover Letter introduction and writing Week 4 It’s Interview Time! -An Elevator Pitch – tell me about yourself -Mock Interviews Week 5 Career Planning and Preparation Overview -Your Unique Value Proposition and Professional Image -Why should I volunteer? -Why do I need a part-time or summer job? -Why should I participate in co-op? -Why wasn’t I selected for an Interview? -What if I change my career plans? I have over 10 years of experience in teaching high school and university students skills in career planning, networking, interviewing and the development of self-marketing materials including résumés and cover letters.
I have been employed as a Youth Employment Officer with a government organization, and at two Universities as a Career Advisor and Co-op Program Coordinator. I am currently a private consultant working with youth and adults to assist with the development of professional and engaging employment documents and interview preparation.
