Class Experience

This course is a weekly private flute lesson (one on one) for intermediate to advanced flutists (at least 3 years of experience). Each lesson is individualized for the student and will cover all of the basics they need to feel confident and joyful when playing the flute. By taking intermediate private lessons, you will:

--Improve your tone, technique, breathing, and articulation so you can sound stunning
--Improve sight reading skills
--Set clear goals and work hard to meet them (I'll be there to help you along the way!)
--Learn all of my practicing tips and tricks to enjoy practicing (you'll actually WANT to take out your flute every day!)
--Prepare flute repertoire with an experienced player
--Prepare for auditions (chair placement, all district, all state, etc)
--Work on scales and daily fundamentals to improve quickly week to week

Private lessons in my studio allow my students to achieve their goals quickly and joyfully with the guidance of an experienced flutist and teacher. I've worked with incredible teachers and students alike and have fine tuned my teaching to meet students right where they are, while giving them all of the tips and tricks I've learned along the way.

Students will have weekly assignments given by the teacher to improve their playing and reach their goals. Students will also have access to the private lesson classroom, where they can ask questions, get access to handouts and tips, and receive all of the one on one attention they need to thrive as they learn the basics of flute playing. Students are expected to prepare their practice material every week and come to their lesson ready to learn. Students are never expected to play perfectly, but are required to show effort week to week.

**Students will be asked to purchase a method book or a solo to prepare during lessons as recommended by the teacher in order to meet their individual needs.**

Learning Goals

Students will establish great flute posture, embouchure, tone, articulation, and will prepare scales and repertoire. We will also establish great breathing, finger placement, and body alignment.

Hi, I'm Mrs. Shelby!

I've been teaching flute in person and online for nine years and I love using this platform to help students gain a love for music. From the moment I picked up a flute in fifth grade, I was hooked! But I seriously struggled to make a sound and even read music in the beginning. It brings me so much joy as a teacher to be able to guide students through those tricky beginning stages of learning the flute, and work with them all the way to playing advanced repertoire and preparing for auditions and performances.

My passion is working with brand new beginners in a fun and engaging environment, as well as challenging students who are well on their way in their flute playing journey. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Morehead State University and received a Graduate Certificate in Flute Performance and Recording & Production from the University of Denver. I am a state certified music teacher in grades Pre-K through 12, and I received KinderFlute teacher training in 2021.

I've taught dozens of brand new beginners, as well as advanced students both in person and on Zoom. Together we're able to find a beautiful sound and have a great start to flute playing! I've also coached advanced students on solo repertoire, tone and technique for competitions, college auditions, and scholarship auditions, as well as undergraduate level music majors. Whether your student is a brand new beginner, prepping for music school auditions, or somewhere in between, I would love to guide them in their flute playing journey.

Outside of teaching and playing the flute, I'm a wife, mom (both to my son, Milo and to my two kitties!), and avid tea drinker ☕️

Thank you for considering me to be a part of your child's music education!

-Mrs. Shelby
