🌟 Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with the dyslexic learner in mind. The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham. 🌟 This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week. Due to the nature of the weekly activities, it is best to start this class on a Monday. 📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list of 30 words at the beginning of each week. During live classes, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. A list of 30 words will be provided, as well as 5 bonus words in order to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels. 📝 Students will be expected to participate by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. We will also discuss proper usage and share creative work. 📝 Students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk in order to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter. 📝 Homework assignments will be given at the end of the first and second live class. 📝 Students can expect a low-pressure spelling test during our Friday class period. Each week a new list will be assigned. 🗓 Sample words from weekly lists 2024: Week of July 22: courageous, amusement, campaign Week of July 29: committee, embarrass, experience Week of August 5: environment, manufacture, disgraceful Week of August 12: chemical, cooperation, analysis Week of August 19: encyclopedia, boulevard, commotion Week of August 26: ambulance, government, congratulations No class the week of September 2 Week of September 9: constitution, material, accompanied Week of September 16: mischievous, attention, atmosphere Week of September 23: noticeable, ingredient, consequently Week of September 30: possess, pneumonia, distinguished Week of October 7: raspberry, patient, grievance Week of October 14: recommend, inconvenient, irresistible Week of October 21: scissors, marriage, intermission Week of October 28 muscle, laughter, fabricate Week of November 4: guarantee, oxygen, immediately Week of November 11: vegetable, scarcely, liquidation Week of November 18: official, mysterious, yacht No class the week of November 25 💪 This class is also offered in a self-paced format for students who prefer not to attend live classes. I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach.
