This class is an authentic learning environment where we are learning to transfer rhythm activities to an instrument and begin to play like the professionals do. Learners will: 1. read music as a set of instructions through standard notation for percussion for quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and quarter and eighth rests. 2. learn a basic technique, posture, and explore personal style We will work through the following essential questions: 1. How do musicians generate creative ideas? 2. How do musicians make creative decisions? 3. How do musician improve the quality of their performance? 4. How do we judge the quality of musical work(s) and performance(s)? Rudiments taught follow the suggested 40 rudiments all drummers should know from the Percussive Arts Society. Role of the teacher will be: 1. to guide through active listening and responding to student technique and performance. 2. use the music milestones of the National Association of Music Educators (NAfME) novice performance standards as they align to the activities of creating, performing, responding, and connecting with music through the performance of a variety of rhythm patterns. 3. discuss mental rehearsal techniques as a practice method when we are away from the drum or the drum is not available. Delivery of instruction will use a variety of techniques from call and response, mimic and rote learning, reading music, and improvisation. Assignments: Participants will have weekly practice patterns to know and master. This may include writing out the counting of the rhythms and sound production from the drum pad. Assessments: Use of a custom, teacher-created developed comprehensive skills development report will be sent at the close of each class for individual student self-reflection and tracking. **NOTE** Please inform the learning leader if you require a specific format to be completed for your ease of documentation purposes.
