Class Experience

Sometimes the best way to improve your Public Speaking skills and/or speaking confidence is lots of practice.

In this class, after a warm-up targeted at improving our articulation, pronunciation, and clarity of speaking, learners will be presented with a Dynamic Discussion statement topic (often this will be phrased in a deliberate way to create a reaction). This will also usually be something where there isn't a clear, straight forward answer, so everyone feels they have something to contribute and can help to develop the discussion in a dynamic way, especially by building on each other's points. Everyone will be encouraged to contribute in the class, even if it is simply articulating their support or disagreement with a previous point made.

Mrs. T an experienced Confident Communications Coach, Speech and drama Tutor, and presenter will help facilitate the discussion by sharing a different public speaking/confidence building technique or tip each week for learners to then try out themselves in that class. She will also make sure everyone gets a chance to share (teaching quieter learners tips on how to do this themselves, even outside of the class), keep the discussion/debate going with extra questions/thinking points, help with ways to extend the discussion (which learners can take away to use outside of class discussions), introduce pauses/brain breaks, if needed, encourage learners to find ways to evidence or back up their point more when required, and help them explore ways to express themselves more clearly.

Mrs. T will also gently correct any mispronunciations or misconceptions from any learners so other learners do not have to do that themselves, and we will learn and develop the discussions together by looking to build on what has already been said and being open to different ideas, views, and concepts.

Topics will change each week, to keep them fresh, and worldly current. Some previous ones have been:
Week 1- The world is fair for everyone,
Week 2- Our planet is in danger of destruction,
Week 3- What form should education take?
Week 4- A universal currency across the world would make life easier?

As learners get more confident they can start to offer their own discussion topics too!

Learning Goals

Learners will develop their public speaking skills and confidence. The more sessions they attend the more tips they learn, and the more their confidence grows.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Southampton
I am a fully qualified teacher (BAPA, PGCE) with 16+ years of experience teaching English and Drama and communication skills (and some Music, and PSHCE) to 11 to 16 year olds in bricks and mortar schools, where I currently still teach part-time, including running small group and 1:1 confidence-building workshops. I also have many years of experience leading community workshop schemes (like create a play in a week) and local drama groups for ages 4 to 16.

As a professional actress, I've performed to children from ages 2-14 in theatres, arts centres, social clubs, historical properties,  nurseries, and schools. Playing roles such as the Gingerbread man and a tortoise, to a wartime headmistress and Queen Elizabeth the first! With lots of Q & A and interactive workshops along the way.

I then branched into presenting (live, events, radio, some TV, and for holiday companies across Europe) including some Voiceover work. I currently create and present drama and presenter tuition videos.

I have produced and directed many productions (musicals and plays) as well, including some I have written myself.

I am very experienced in coaching learners to produce their best, and I love seeing them develop in front of my eyes. Many of my ex-students have gone on to study at prestigious London stage schools in acting and directing, even though we are over 200 miles away, and they only take a small number from out of the catchment area each year. I have also coached learners on all different levels, like one who didn't wish to speak when I started working with him (aged 10) but he ended up playing the lead role in his final year production (aged 15).
