Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
Do you love illustrating and want to learn more techniques and level up your illustration skills? You will follow along step-by-step to draw and paint a Fox from a photo reference.

✨ This class is designed to get students thinking through how to see like an artist, breaking down the reference into basic shapes and lines, then adding detail, nuance and style.

✨ This class is beginner-intermediate, which means beginners can follow along step-by-step, and if you have some practice at Procreate already you will learn new techniques, style and be able to customize and add details with my prompts!

✨ This class contains 11 videos that you will receive access to all at once as soon as you enroll! You can complete the whole course in one week if you want to, but you have access to the recordings for a full year—giving you the option to take as long as you want to work through the material as many times as you like.

✨ You can message me anytime if you need feedback or help! I would also LOVE to see your artwork: Please share your fox with me by uploading your image in the classroom!

✨ I like to show students different styles and choices you can make from topic-to-topic, so if you eventually take all of my classes, overtime you will have lots of practice and a wide knowledge base for what is possible, so you can learn to find, invent and incorporate styles that YOU love!

✨ This is a recorded version of my very popular live digital illustration class. I LOVE collaborating with students! Send me your topic requests and maybe I can make a class for it!

✨ While this class is listed for kids ages 10-14, I believe it will still be a great fit for kids younger than 10 who are motivated and can follow new and somewhat complex steps at their own pace. I also think this class is a great fit for kids older than 14 who may be new or somewhat new to Procreate, or need extra time to move through material. Self-paced classes move as fast as each kid wants or needs, and I never talk down to my students!

👉🏼 The app Procreate can be purchased for about $10 from the Apple Store. Unfortunately, Procreate is not available on Android tablets.

👉🏼 Although this class is for the app Procreate, if you are comfortable with a different art app and are willing to find equivalent tools on your own, you can still take this course: We do a lot of building observational, drawing and painting skills that can apply to many mediums!

Lesson 1:
Load Your Reference Photo
In this video I will show you how to create a new screen-sized canvas, which we can use as a digital sketchbook in all of our classes together!

I will also show you how to load your reference photo into Procreate, which is important to look at a lot while you draw!

Download the reference photo to your IPad before beginning this lesson!
Lesson 2:
Sketch Torso, Neck and Head
In this video I will show you how to see and draw the basic shapes of the torso, neck and head of our fox! We use the selection tool and transform tools to help us edit our shapes too.

I will also show you how to edit the maximum size of any brush in Procreate. We will use the 6B pencil to sketch our fox.
6 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Sketch Front Legs
In this video I will show you how to see and draw the basic shapes of our fox's front legs. We'll learn how to make new layers and why layers are helpful, and we'll use more of our selection and transform tools to help us with our proportions!
6 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
Sketch Back Legs and Tail
In this video I will show you how to see and draw the basic shapes of the back legs and tail of our fox! We'll use select and transform tools, talk about stylizing our drawings, use anchor points to help us measure the correct proportions, and we'll select many layers at once so we can move many objects at the same time, and we'll merge layers! So many things, I can't wait to get started let's go!

Learning Needs
All my self-paced classes are chunked in small videos so that learners have natural breaks built into their learning experience.
Parental Guidance
In this class we use the professional digital art-making app called Procreate. This app must be used on an IPad (or IPhone as the pocket version), and can be purchased for a one-time fee of about $10 from the app store. No memberships, logins or other in-app purchases are required once you purchase your copy of the app!
Supply List
1) IPad
(IPhone with Procreate Pocket app works exactly the same, but will look a bit different because it’s compact.)
2) Apple Pencil or third-party stylus is optional, but a lot easier and more fun to use than your finger.
3) Plug it in and keep it charged! 😉

Bear Howe
I am a self-taught award-winning, exhibiting, working artist. I have a degree in journalism from Temple University and I worked for years in journalism, editing, graphic design and marketing before quitting it all to pursue my passion and become a working artist, writer and educator 8 years ago! I have had to create portfolios and submit many, many times!

Growth Mindset:
I teach targeted art skills in a safe social-emotional space where students can explore how to think and see like an artist, learn to fail and try again and build confidence in their own intuition and work.

As an artist and writer, I have taught elementary, middle school and high school art, illustration, animation and creative writing in classes including: drawing, painting, comics, stop motion, character design, and fundamental art principles like line, perspective, color, composition and more.
