Class Experience

In this multi-day camp style class, learners will focus on advancing their pre-existing social-emotional, executive functioning, and mental health and wellness skills. 

Through interactive and engaging learning opportunities, learners will increase their knowledge and skillset as the teacher guides the class through meaningful dialogue and fun and engaging activities, using games, crafts, and videos. Learner to learner interaction is encouraged to help support one another and social skill development.

The class will be structured as follows:

Day 1:
-Introductions 
-theme is Healthy Friendships, we will use interactive activities to review the concept of personal boundaries and having and being a good friend 

Day 2:
-check-in's
-theme is Dealing With Everyday Stress and Frustrations, through scenarios, an interactive worksheet, and a video, we will discuss this concept and some preventative and in-the-moment ways to combat feeling overwhelmed

Day 3:
-check-in's
-theme is Anger Management, using interactive activities, games, and videos, we will focus on ways to recognize and deal with our anger in a positive manner

Day 4:
-check-in's
-theme is Self-Esteem, utilizing a video, crafts, and interactive activities, we will explore the concept of loving and being kind to oneself 

Day 5:
-check-in's
-theme is Positive Coping Strategies, using a craft activity and other engaging techniques, we will focus on strategies that can be implemented as needed, in various environments and situations
-review 

Learners do not need any previous knowledge to join this class.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Due to the nature of the skill areas, strong emotions may emerge throughout this class. The teacher will ensure learners feel safe within the class and walk them through their feelings in a gentle manner as to use those emotions as agents of change and discussion points to support concepts being taught. Scissors are required for the last day of class. Adult support may be required.

Ms. Sheera has a 4 year Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child and Youth Care and a 3-year college Diploma in Child and Youth Work. She has been creating and facilitating emotional regulation groups for over 20 years in numerous environments, such as in schools, group home facilities and community centres; and with a variety of children and youth (i.e. children and youth with ASD, ADHD, OD, CD diagnoses, as well as neurotypical children and youth). 
Ms. Sheera has the following training certifications and continuously participates in professional learning opportunities:
- Behaviour Management Strategies certification
- Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) training
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) certification
- Mental Health First Aid certification
- Understanding and Intervening in the Cycle of Youth Violence training
- Single Sessions Counselling certification
- Courageous Conversations, Confronting Racial Discrimination and Anti-Black Racism (monthly ongoing opportunity)
