Zombie Robots: Learning About Circuit Basics
Class experience
Learn how to make a circuit as we build simple robots. I call this class zombie robots because each robot we make lacks a chip or a brain. That is, we can't actually control the movements of our creation. We will create three different robots in this class: a drawing robot, a hexbug, and a robot made of recycled materials. Each week we will learn about the concepts of the parts in the project, as well as go over how to make the robot. Students will have time to begin their project during...
I am thrilled you are considering taking one of my classes! I hold a PhD in Molecular Biophysics from Boston University, taught hundreds of learners in after-school programs or my free community science classes, and ecstatic to be a part of the Outschool community. I have done the Zombie Robots course in about six different schools, with rave reviews and ecstatic kids. What I love most about this course is that we build the circuit basics together, but then diverge in the final making of our creations. I have seen Darth Vader hexbugs, video game-esque recycled robots, and jittery drawing robots. This class has a massive amount of space for kids to imagine and create. In addition, enrollment in this class will open up my current library of helper videos. These videos help with circuit debugging, individual circuit components, and more. The videos are meant to help student understanding while working on projects outside of class time.
Each week your learner will need the following: 1x Rosie Research Zombie Robots kit (rosieresearch.com/shop/zombie-robots-kit/) + 1 plastic cup OR In your house or online: - Craft supplies (https://amzn.to/2SxWVYA) - 3x Markers (https://amzn.to/2PkTph7) - Double stick foam squares (https://amzn.to/2DcVLx4) - Electrical tape (https://amzn.to/2CQT8QB) - 2x LEDs (https://amzn.to/2JtReGW) - 3x AA batteries (https://amzn.to/2SAEkLB) - 1x CR2032 battery (https://amzn.to/2RpecBJ) - 1x vibrating motor (https://amzn.to/2CTvHGx) - 2x wired DC motors with battery holders and switches (https://amzn.to/2RoBHuM) - 1 plastic cup Students may also need access to scissors, wire strippers, or pliers.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parental guidance is not necessary for this class, however, please remember, you know your learner best.
