Class Experience

***This is a Flex Class - No Live Classes***

The purpose of this class is to teach learners to be responsible with money. Learners will work on creating a spending plan and spending diary. They will discuss the difference between needs and wants and learn basic information about the stock market.

There is a good amount of math involved in this unit. Learners will need to know addition and subtraction, as well as work on finding percentages.

Technology: We will use the Outschool classroom to communicate. I will post discussion questions and video links and learners will be able to share their comments by text and video. We will also use Google Slides and Google Forms to complete tasks.

I will post the discussion questions or activities for the week. Learners are expected to complete the activities and respond to the discussion questions within the week.

During the last week of class learners will create a spending plan for the next four months. They will assume that they get $10/week and have to create a plan for that money based on what they learned in the class. To make their experience more meaningful, I highly suggest giving them an allowance of $10 (or more)/week. However, there should also be things that will be expected to pay for with that allowance. This will help them learn to manage their money and make good choices. They may also make a few mistakes, and that's okay. I think it is better that they make small mistakes while they are young instead of big credit card debt mistakes when they are older.

Weekly Focus:
Week 1: Allowance Allocation Activity and Needs vs. Wants
Week 2: Debt, Loans, and Interest
Week 3: Budgeting (part 1) and Writing Checks
Week 4: Basic Introduction to the Stock Market and Compound Interest
Week 5: Price Comparison, Advertisement Analysis
Week 6: Budgeting (part 2) - Create a Spending Plan for the next 4 months

There are not any live classes in this FLEX class, but if your learner would like more one-on-one live help with a task, I will be listing a tutoring option for $30/half-hour. Also, if you have a group of students that would be interested in doing a live class, I would be willing to do the class live if there is enough interest.

If you have any questions about the class, please feel free to ask! I am happy to help! I hope to see you in the class soon!
Learning Goals
Learners will learn about budgeting, needs and wants, and very basic information about the stock market. This a great opportunity for them to practice their math skills.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We discuss money in this class. Learners will be asked questions like how they earn their money and the experiences they have had with money. If a learner feels the question is too personal, they do not need to share their answers.
Supply List
Learners will need a basic calculator and a notebook. Weekly materials will be added to the class as needed to complete activities.

For the best experience, I highly suggest giving your student an allowance of at least $10/week. (They can be required to pay for necessities with this money.)

Benefits of Flex Classes:

***Please note all teachers do their flex classes differently. Therefore, these statements may not be true for all flex classes on Outschool, but they are true of MY classes.***

1. Less technical difficulties.
You do not need to worry about your internet or the teacher’s internet not working at a specific time resulting in the class being cancel or the learner not able to attend.

2. The learner can learn at their own pace.
The learner can pause and rewatch parts of the lesson as needed. The learner is able to complete all the tasks at once or split it up into days or hours as they wish.

3. Cost less.
Since I do not need to pay a babysitter to care for my children at a specific time, I am able to offer the flex classes at a much lower cost than live classes.

4. More time for feedback and interaction.
Even though the classes are not live, OutSchool as added the feature to record video comments. Learners can share their work throughout the week instead of having just a set class time.
