Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Session 1 - Let's Rock the Rock Cycle
- Teacher and students will introduce themselves.
- Teacher will lead a brainstorming session to activate prior knowledge about the rock cycle. 
- Teacher will give a mini lesson on the different parts of the rock cycle. 
- Students will watch a brief video about the rock cycle.
- Teacher will lead students in creating the different stages of the rock cycle out of edible materials.

Session 2 - Soil Layers 
- Teacher will quickly greet all students.
- Teacher will lead a brainstorming session to activate prior knowledge about soil.
- Teacher will give a mini lesson on the different layers of soil. 
- Students will watch a brief video about the layers of soil.
- Teacher will lead students in creating the different layers of soil out of edible materials.

Session 3 - Phases of the Moon 
- Teacher will quickly greet all students.
- Teacher will lead a brainstorming session to activate prior knowledge about the moon. 
- Teacher will give a mini lesson on the moon and the different phases. 
- Students will watch a brief video about the moon phases.
- Teacher will lead students in creating the different phases of the moon out of edible materials.
Learning Goals
- Students will be able to identify the three categories of rocks: igneous, (formed from molten rock); sedimentary (pieces of other rocks and fossilized organisms); and metamorphic (formed from heat and pressure).

- Students will be able to describe the major components of soil.

- Students will be able to describe the changes in the observable shape of the moon over the course of about a month.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
In this class, we will be using edible materials (candies, cookies, pudding, etc.) to create models. Students will be encouraged to eat their models after class. Please read the supply list and verify that your learner is not lactose intolerant or allergic to any of the ingredients. Feel free to substitute any supplies for similar ones that are suitable for your learner. Warning: Please provide your learner with plastic utensils and paper plates to avoid the danger of using glass or sharp items. We will use a hair dryer as a heat source. Learner should be careful not to touch the hot candy to avoid any burns.

For all 3 Sessions: 

-Printed Lab Sheet/Activity
-Pencil
-Crayons

Session 1 - 
3 pieces of Starburst Candy (in different colors/flavors)
1 pair of child sized scissors (will be used for cutting the starburst candy)
1 paper plate
1 pencil
1 5" X 5" piece of aluminum foil
1 hair dryer (to be used as a heat source)
1 paperweight (for example, a heavy book)
3 or 4 sheets of paper towels (for messes)
Wet wipes (for messes)

Session 2 - 
2 Tablespoons of chocolate chips (baking chips)
1 Chocolate or Vanilla pudding cup
1 Chocolate Chip Cookie
2 Tablespoons of crushed Oreos
2 Tablespoons of coconut flakes (Optional: mix with green food coloring)
4 Gummy worms
1 Clear plastic cup
2 Tablespoons (or measuring spoons)
5 Sticky post-it page flags (or one normal sized post-it note cut into 5 strips)
1 pencil
3 or 4 sheets of paper towels (for messes)
Wet wipes (for messes)

Session 3 - 
8 original or double stuff Oreo Cookies (or similar round sandwich cookies)
1 pencil 
Crayons
1 spoon or popsicle stick 
1 paper plate
3 or 4 sheets of paper towels (for messes)
Wet wipes (for messes)
 3 files available upon enrollment

Hello!  Nice to meet you!  I am Ilene. I love all subjects, but my passion is everything related to Language Arts.  I am excited to teach all my students about the wonderful world of the written word. We are going to travel through the pages of a book to learn about the real world and the fantastic world of fictional stories. I have earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education (K-6) from Florida International University and I am certified in Elementary Education and hold an Endorsement in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) (K-12).  I have been an elementary school teacher for 15 years and have taught Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Math, Science, STEM, ESOL and even Spanish!  Learning is a journey and everyone's path is different, but I believe that meaningful, fun, interactive lessons can empower students to be lifelong learners and readers.
