Class Experience

Young Music Composers Club is a place for kids to explore writing music (composing) using music software called Noteflight Learn. Composing with a program like Noteflight Learn is a great way to see music theory concepts come to life. The program plays your composition! This is a great class for kids who enjoy music and want to explore composition. It is a very small class so that each student can have time to ask their questions and receive help.

We will learn how to put notes and rests on the staff, use different lengths of notes to make rhythms, choose instrument sounds to play the music, and explore musical sounds that we can make with music notation. All students will have a chance to show their compositions for other students to hear and celebrate. Students will be encouraged to explore writing music that sounds good to them. We will actively practice being a positive creative learning community, supporting each other by listening and showing kindness. Access to Noteflight Learn is included with enrollment. (See Parental Guidance statement for more information about this external resource and giving consent to use it.)

Composing topics we will focus on:
Week of 6/19: using high and low pitches in a composition
Week of 6/26: using long and short notes to make a rhythm
Week of 7/3: making chords (more than one note on a stem)
Week of 7/10: choosing and adding instrument sounds

In this positive creative learning community, we will:
- take turns asking questions
- give others equal chances to share and listen
- listen patiently when others speak
- use kind words when speaking about others
- treat each person's style as important and valuable
- let the teacher guide the conversation so everyone can learn

Some basic computer skills will make it easier to begin composing. Students can learn the skills in this class:
- selecting items on the screen
- copying selected items (Ctrl-C or Command-C)
- pasting selected items (Ctrl-V or Command-V)
- making a shared zoom screen window smaller so that two windows can show side-by-side (browser and zoom screen)
- switching between several menus or command bars to find tools
Note: Noteflight Learn is much easier to use on a computer (PC/Mac) than a tablet (such as an iPad)

About me:
In 30 years of teaching music in private lessons and public elementary schools, the most incredible moments for me have occurred when students enjoyed learning music and felt positive personal connections. This is what I hope to bring to the many young people learning from home or hoping for more meaningful music experiences. I am positive, upbeat, and relaxed, and invite students to join in as they feel comfortable. If you are looking for a connective, nurturing, musical environment for your child or children, I hope you'll join us!
