Class Experience

One class is great, but two classes are better!
Come explore why English words look the way they do and see how we used to build word definitions. Together, we'll dig into our language roots using study materials that complement J. Lundquist's curriculum, English from the Roots Up.* Since Latin and Greek word roots are not typically included in the traditional elementary academic workload, this course is one way to gain exposure and create positive associations with the material before it becomes "required."

CAMP 2 Covered Topics: 1) Outer Space 2) Shapes and Lines 3) Physics 4) Measurements 5) Physics 6) Same or Different 7) Government 8) Thoughts & Ideas. Bonus) Numbers 1-10

**What We'll Do In Class:**
Each class, students will learn four root words, prefixes, or suffixes in each class and review the meaning and application through vocabulary-building conversations, visual aids, example words, and a multi-dimensional journaling activity. Students are encouraged to "collect" these journal entries into a three-ring binder. The lessons support visual learners, oratory learners, early writers, and include hands-on drawing activities both in and after class to support retention. With short lessons, the tasks will scoot along with moderate to high energy.

**No prior experience needed.**
Section 1 and Section 2 of this course are not dependent on each other and may be taken in any order. The content is different but the instruction style is the same and students can continue with their same journaling collection.

Please note: we will focus on 32 main words, however, students will be exposed to nearly 80 auxiliary words which compound with the main 32. Activities both in class and in post-class worksheets will remain centered on the 32.

**Teaching Style:**
The teacher frequently incorporates humor and invites personal or relatable conversation into the sessions to assist with learner investment and attention to the task. She is typically non-directive and tends to emphasize a positive learning experience (activating a flexible "yes-brain") over a standardized or objectively perfect task.

Parental Guidance
Some of the vocabulary tasks may include terminology related to medical, biological, physical, or other science fields. While the overall terms may be long and outside the scope of their grade-level reading, the primary focus will remain on recognizing the shorter Greek component WITHIN the longer term. Please note: we will focus on 32 main words, however, students will be exposed to nearly 80 auxiliary words which compound with the main 32. Activities both in class and in post-class worksheets will remain centered on the 32. At the end of class: A certificate of completion and master word list will be issued to parents at the end of the course so classwork can be reviewed and the certificate signed. Class Rules: Enrolled Students Only. Cameras On (unless the teacher approves a parent’s request). Microphones Muted (if there is background noise). No Foul, Hurtful or Offensive Language or Gestures Allowed.
Supply List
Students will need to bring a pen/pencil to class and either print the build-as-you-go worksheet, or create their own unique journal to "collect" the words they learn. Optional homework activities will be provided after class by a link to a downloadable PDF. They are OPEN BOOK study activities.

Sources
English from the Roots Up, Volume 1 and 2, Latin and Greek Root Word flashcards from Joegil Lundquist (Copyright 1993). Both flashcard packs are available for purchase online through several major retailers and through Literacy Unlimited (http://www.englishrootsup.com/). The Greek and Latin are intermixed in the curriculum, but this class will only focus on one language base (per the title/description). It is highly recommended (but not required) that students who are approaching middle school purchase a set of their own. *The teacher has obtained express verbal permission from the copyright holder to use the materials as of 5/12/21.
