Intermediate Level
There are 3 units of writing that will be covered in this class. We will write two narratives, three opinion pieces, and three informative/explanatory pieces. Learners will publish 8 pieces of writing. Welcome to 4th and 5th Grade Writing Workshop Class, where we'll learn how to make our writing go from ordinary to extraordinary! Your learner will receive individualized feedback and personalized instruction to help meet their needs and grow as a writer. There are 3 units of writing that will be covered in this class. We will write two narratives, three opinion pieces, and three informative/explanatory pieces. Learners will publish 8 pieces of writing. Learners will submit their writing to the teacher for personalized feedback. Each weekly lesson includes: -a mini-lesson/instruction -studying and analyzing a model of that type of writing (mentor text) -crafting our written piece -revising and editing activities -feedback -publishing activities Lessons 1-4: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. π―Focus: Elements of Narrative Writing (beginning, middle, end; characters, setting, plot; problem/solution; dialogue) πMini-Lesson: Choose specific, powerful adjectives and verbs; Using figures of speech to make writing more interesting (idioms, similes, metaphors); Using a hook to draw the reader in; Using descriptive details to help the reader visualize the setting and events β Skills: Correctly use quotation marks and commas in dialogue; Revise to improve writing πPublish: Two narrative pieces Lessons 5-8: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. π―Focus: Elements of Informative/Explanatory Writing (main idea with supporting relevant details; topic and concluding sentences) πMini-Lesson: Choosing relevant supporting details/information; crafting a strong topic sentence and concluding sentence; Eliminating extra words; Using content specific vocabulary β Skills: Use conjunctions to connect clauses, phrases, and words together to create complex sentences; using transition words (additive, adversative, casual, and sequential transition words) πPublish: Three informative/explanatory pieces Lessons 9-12: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. π―Focus: Elements of Opinion Paragraphs (supporting an opinion with details; focus on one topic) πMini-Lesson: Make a claim and support with details/information; crafting a strong topic sentence and concluding sentence; facts vs. opinions β Skills: Organize ideas, add opinions, support opinions, use transition words πPublish: Three opinion pieces *Leaves of Learning Academy is an organization on Outschool with about 18 teachers. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching. I am happy to offer a refund to any learner who prefers not to attend the class with a substitute. Please send a message through Outschool in that event and I will issue a refund. Your teacher may, however, transfer your learner to another available section, or provide a class recording, at their discretion. β If your learner has not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the classβs start time, the meeting may be cancelled, at the teacherβs discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund. β Refunds are not guaranteed in the event that your learner misses a past or future class meeting due to a schedule conflict, and will depend on the class-specific refund policy. β If your learnerβs meeting time changes because of daylight saving time starting or ending for several world regions, you are not entitled to a refund if theyβre unable to attend. Please review your learnerβs schedule ahead of time to ensure you know when classes are meeting.
