Class Experience
In this 30 minute session, I will provide writing support for students who wish to bring their writing to the next level. When the session begins, I will spend the first 3 - 5 minutes getting to know the student. This will involve the student telling their name and answering questions such as: 1. What do you like about writing? 2. What do you believe are your writing strengths? 3. What would you like to improve in concerning your writing? Once the student and I have gotten to know one another, we will move to analyzing the student's work. The students are encouraged to submit a sample of their work in a private message to me before class. If the student has already taken a course with me (examples: creative writing, writing a narrative, writing games, etc.) then I should have a copy of their work and will use that as a sample. This will allow me to identify their strengths and areas of improvement. The student and I will discuss any additional concerns that the student has about their work so that we can address them together. The student and I will then form an action plan on how to continue to improve the student's writing. This action plan may be in the form of re-arranging some paragraphs in a story, adding additional details, utilizing transition words (first, next, then, and then and finally) as well as writing a final draft that contains the corrections that the student and I discussed. After class, I will provide a summary of what was covered and discussed during the session to the parent(s). requesting a different time and I will do my best to schedule a session with you!)
Learning Goals
In this session, a student and I will be working on their writing to help take their writing to the next level. The student will need to submit a sample of their work before class (unless I have a sample of their work from a previous writing class that they have taken with me.) If the student brings a creative writing piece to the session, our discussion will focus on:
1. Having a clear beginning, middle and ending to a story
2. Writing a clear climax in the story
3. Creating dynamic and static characters
4. Designing an engaging setting that utilizes the reader's five senses to help the story come alive
5. Incorporating descriptive details (Examples: personification, similes, synonyms, adjectives) to add an additional level to the student's writing.
6. Writing the story in one tense (Past, present or future.)
If the student is bringing a book report or book summary to the session then our discussion will focus on:
1. Identifying the sequence of events in the story (beginning, middle and ending)
2. Clarifying and classifying the details of the story that are essential to the report or summary
3. Using transition words (first, next, then, and then and finally) to the report/summary in order to add fluency to the report/summary.
If the student needs, I can also cover:
- Cause and Effect
- Text Structure
- Point of View
- Identifying past and present tense
