Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 12
This private tutoring class is designed so students of any writing ability can get personalized support on a weekly basis or by dropping in as needed. Great for homeschoolers, unschoolers and schoolers alike! Each class meeting has the option of submitting teacher's instructions and/or writing prompts for a writing assignment, or I can assess the student's writing skills and then begin helping them develop writing skills with fun assignments that are inspired by the student's own interests.

To the student:
Did you get a writing assignment and you aren't quite sure how to start? Maybe you have a paper started and you want to make sure you're following your teacher's instructions? Perhaps you just want to find ways to improve your writing so you clearly convey your point or understanding of the material? Maybe you just don't like to write. This class can help take the frustration and anxiety out of writing.

To the parent:
Spelling, grammar, and mechanics will be evaluated, with instruction and plenty of examples to help students learn from their own mistakes. Writing skills are further developed using the Socratic Method to add depth and build confidence! As a professional paper reviewer for students in Middle School, High School, and College, I find that often a student makes the same type of mistake throughout their paper. This lets me know an area of ELA that the student is not yet proficient in, and so the goal is to explain it so that mistake is no longer made. I also use the Socratic Method of asking questions about what's been written, pointing out areas where details aren't clear or are missing, and guiding the student to figure out what might need changing or adding to help improve the quality of their writing overall. Tutoring in this way leads to greatly improved writing ability and much more confident writers!

Often a student 'hates 'writing because they find the process of taking a prompt and turning it into a well-organized paper to be overwhelming and arduous. Breaking down assignments into smaller steps and learning a few simple techniques can really help make the writing process easier. I also find that showing the steps, rather than telling the steps, can make a world of difference. Everyone has the ability to write well, and being able to organize one's thoughts onto paper is a skill that, once learned, brings out the great writer in anyone!

Hi! My name is Ana and I’m excited to be offering classes on Outschool!I am proud to say that my daughter graduated high school at age sixteen in 2021, and my son did the same in 2024. They are both enrolled in college classes and doing very well and earning A's. I believe their success is in part due to their ability to take what they are being taught in classes and understand why it's important to learn it. I feel strongly that when children understand the 'why' behind what they are asked to learn or do, they engage more deeply. Writing is a critical skill that every child needs to learn so that they are successful in school and in life; writing is the primary way we communicate our understanding of material to our teachers. When a student understands this, and then learns some basic, foundational writing skills, they can more effectively communicate their understanding of a subject. This leads to better grades and greater self-confidence.

I earned my BA in Anthropology from UC Davis and then went on to the University of Montana to earn my Master's Degree. Throughout my college career I worked for my different department chairs as either a tutor or a Teaching Assistant, and as such assisted my peers in material comprehension and essay writing. After graduation I briefly taught Anthropology at my local community college, and later earned my TOEFL Certification so I could specifically teach English as a foreign language.

I have spent the majority of the last twenty years, however, working as a tutor for students of all ages. Prior to the COVID pandemic I had my own after-school tutoring center where a team of instructors and I helped children in Kindergarten through High School catch up in Reading, Writing and Math. Currently, I tutor students of all ages online in Reading and Writing, and am a professional Essay Reviewer.

My focus with teaching classes on Outschool is to ultimately prepare children for success as adults by empowering them with writing tools and skills, and to nurture their own ability to put their ideas and stories down on paper. In my Outschool tutoring sessions, individualized instruction helps a student work on areas where they are struggling, while at the same time nurtures a positive attitude about their abilities as a writer. In my longer courses, writing assignments give students a platform to make a list of goals, take notes and organize their thoughts and ideas, and deepens their ability to communicate their points effectively in paragraphs and longer essays.

In my free time I like to travel to new places with my kids and visit historical sites. We also love to go to Universal Studios and Disney - both in California and in Florida! I also grew up riding horses and competing in show jumping and eventing, and now I have a pony that I'm teaching to pull a cart!

I look forward to seeing your child in my class!
