When I first started writing comics, I was flying blind. Unlike screenwriting for films, there is no "one right way" to format a comic book script. There are, however, definite do's and don'ts when it comes to communicating the writer's vision to the art team, which includes the penciler, inker, colorist, and letterer. This class is the one I wish I had when I was starting out. We'll be covering how to break out story beats, and panel-by-panel script format for the action, dialog, and sound effects of comics and graphic novels. I'll be showing examples from my own comics so that learners can see how an artist takes the original script and uses it as a guideline to create the finished comic page from start to finish. We'll also be whiteboarding learner story ideas and mapping out the pacing so they can use it as a launching pad for their own comic book. Also featured is a special video created just for this class from Marvel artist Dennis Calero, talking about how he works with scripts at a professional level -- a rare inside look at the process directly from an industry pro!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been a professional writer for about 30 years. My comic book scripts have been praised internationally by industry professionals such as Louise Simonson and Ken Lashley, and I was one of 20 finalists out of over 3000 entries in the Stan Lee & MTV comic book story competition, "The Seekers." Two of my comics, "Triune" and "Isaac's Wings" were featured at Comic-Con San Diego for several years.
